looking for a good side and an app to bring

I am going to my cousins for turkey day and we both live far away from the family so it is a potluck situation. Anyways I am bringing this fantastic cranberry sauce but what else! I need a good solid app and a good side any ideas? Last year I brought a corn dish it was ok but nothing exciting.

Would love to hear of your great ideas :) TIA

Re: looking for a good side and an app to bring

  • Brussels Sprouts sliced thin (about 3-4 slices per sprout) and cooked in a skillet w/ a little olive oil, and tossed with dried cranberries and a little S&P.  It's so easy and quick (only needs to cook for about 5 minutes) and delicious.  You can either have everything prepped to just toss it on the stove for 5 minutes once you're there, or cook it ahead at home and just warm it up in time for dinner.

Big hit at my house, even people who claim they don't like Brussels Sprouts.

  • Bread is always a good side, especially if you are traveling.  Make or buy an nice loaf.

As for an app, cheeseballs are always a hit with my family, and they travel well.

  • For the app, try a bread bowl dip.  Everyone loves it.  You just take a packet of Lipton vegetable soup mix, frozen chopped spinach (thawed) and a small container of sour cream and mix them all together.  You can hollow out a round lof of bread (like a boule or a foccacia) and out the dip right in the breador you can put it in a dish with chunks of bread around it to dip.

And for a side, my husband's family makes cinnamon carrots.  So easy.  Buy microwave-in-bag baby carrots.  Cook the carrots and then make a sauce w/ about 3 tb of melted butter, 1 tsp cinnamon, and 1/2c of brown sugar.

  • bacon-wrapped scallops - super easy as its only 2 ingredients plus wooden toothpicks.
