family staying with us for holidays - tips?

hi y'all! for christmas this year, my husband's brother and wife are staying at our home for four days. i have had guest stay the weekend, but never anything special (just friends, etc). i would really love to be very accommodating and prepared for their weekend. my biggest concern is that they will be bored and hungry and uncomfortable!

we live in a 1100 sq. foot apartment in the country that is open concept, so room and privacy isn't the greatest. i would like to do very minimal cooking while they are here - maybe warm some pre-made things up. we are celebrating the family christmas at the my husband's parents house - so im not having to have the big meal here! *whew*

any tips?  things to have on hand, recipes for breakfast food, snacks, cocktails? activities?

Re: family staying with us for holidays - tips?

  • We host my husbands family 2 times per year. About 11 of them in total.  I usually have bagels, muffins, cereal and fruit available for breakfast everyday except for their last day. Everyone wakes at different times and eat when they want to. I always go all out for breakfast on the last day.  Keep lots of milk, water and juice on hand too.

We usually have a Honeybaked Ham in the fridge with lots of fresh bread and chips, so that if anyone gets hungry they can easily make a sandwich.  One of the big rules at my house is, when you stay with me you are to make yourself at home (make yourself a sandwich if you are hungry, go to the fridge and get yourself something to drink if you want it, etc.).

I always bake a couple of cakes too, but for a small group 1 cake would probably work.  Also, have some crackers and cheese easily accessible.

My biggest challenge is usually, just keeping everything in the bathroom ship shape and replacing hand towels every few hours.

We never do cocktails, we just keep plenty of wine and beer in the wine fridge.  :)

  • Since pp gave you food tips, I'll give you this list I've saved for the ingredients for a welcoming guest room.

    bedside carafe
    clock (night-readable, non-ticking, preferably)
    luggage rack
    choices for sleeping pillows
    full length mirror
    light to read by
    towels out
    closet space & hangers
    drawer space
    counter space
    featherbed
    chair w/ table & lamp
    snacks

  • I agree with both posters.  A couple of things I also keep on hand for simple snacks- cheese, cheese spread and crackers; shrimp in the freezer and cocktail sauce; pretzels; hummus; veggies

  • The two big things I've noticed in hosting our families are snack and drink choices. We don't keep snacks or soda in our house, so I have to remember to stock up on things like that for company.
