Where to live Downtown Boston?
Young professionals 20/30s in Boston, moving from NC, we definitely want to live in the city, most likely will WFH and do a reverse commute to Hopkinton or Boxborough.
We have friends in Brookline and Cleveland Circle but trying to get a good overview of the different neighborhoods and or any pros/cons.
Re: Where to live Downtown Boston?
I have lived in the South End for the past 7 years and I love it. My partner works in Southboro and does the reverse commute and it's not bad. Easy access to 90/mass pike for commuting.
The South End has a great neighborhood feel. Amazing restaurants, local shops and easy access to lots of fun stuff in the city. For a while it was mostly known as the "gay neighborhood." Now it's a great mix of people. Many young professionals, even young families moving in.
Of course, the neighborhood that is right for you depends a lot on what you are looking for and your price point.
My DH and I have been living in the West End for about four years and really love it. We border the Beacon Hill area and the North End. It is definitely an urban area with lots of energy. We are adjacent to the MGH campus and within walking distance of the North End, the Waterfront, Quincy Market, the Boston Garden and many historic sites. We are blocks away from many of Boston's fantastic restaurants and open air areas on the Charles River.
The area is a mix of young professionals (Medical Residents & staff), young families and old school Bostonians. After living in the Fenway/Kenmore area for years, the West End has been a real pleasure.
Thank you! Do you rent or own??
We own now but will most likely rent until we figure out what we like. Plus housing is going to be much more expensive compared to Raleigh but we really want to live in a city within walking distance to stuff.
My SIL lived in Back Bay for a while and loved it - she was definitely walking distance to everything (loads of great restaurants, the Commons, Public Garden, etc.) from there. They rented an apartment in a gorgeous brownstone.
Do you definitely want to be in Boston or would you be open to other areas as long as they are urban enough? I ask because Brookline is technically a different city but has great schools, if kids are a future possibility. Cambridge/Somerville also has some awesome areas with loads of things to do, great accessibility to Storrow/Memorial Drive/90, and also pretty easy access to downtown Boston.
Good luck with the move!
Thanks I love Back Bay, what I've seen of it visiting and apartments online... I know its pricer.
Definitely open to Brookline and Cambridge as we have friends in both of those areas... as long as we can ride the T. My husband will be commuting west on 90/Mass Turnpike to Hopkinton... so somewhere near that would be benefical for easy on/off... we were in JP last Tuesday and it was pretty far off the highway if that makes sense (93)
We own, but it has pros & cons. If you know you will be living here for several years, then I would say it's worth the investment of buying in the area. The West End, the Back Bay, and Beacon Hill haven't suffered as much as other areas when the housing bubble burst.
I agree with a previous poster, Cambridge is a great area as is Belmont and Brookline.
If your husband is commuting to Hopkinton, you may want to add Newton to your list of places to consider. Some parts of Newton are very T-accessible via the D-line while being very close to 95 and 90. Maybe Newton Falls or Newton Center?
Hi ~
We live in Plymouth (on the south shore) but just rented an apartment for the work week in Back Bay. I love it. Really close to everything that I love to do - shopping, the park, great restaurants.
Also, i saw your screen name- did you both go to elon? i graduated from there in 2000 and still miss it!
