Plasma/LCD/LED TV's ~ any opinions?
I'm pretty sure that DH and I and going to take the plung this year and buy a flat screen. I haven't done a lot of research, but I have heard that LED is the way to go. How do you guys fell about your tvs? I also thought we would get a low 40", but I read if you are 8ft or more away, you should get at least a 50". Are you happy with the size of yours?
Re: Plasma/LCD/LED TV's ~ any opinions?
We just got a 52" plasma. We love it. We actually went with the intention of getting an LED. We chatted with the guy and Jeff actually asked about the Plasma because they are significantly less. All LED is, is an LCD with lighting around it, either behind or on the edge. We used have an regular LCD until it broke. I do not notice a difference between our old LCD and the Plasma. The best thing to do is reasearch and get what is important to you guys.
We paid $620 for our TV at Costco. It is a Panasonic Viera.

We were very worried about the plasma burning out, it actually is rated for more life than the LCD these days, at least the brand we got was. The plasma is good for quick movements, sports, movies with a lot of action, etc..... We compared them for an hour at Costco and took the plunge, Costco has a really good return policy though, so if we hated it that much we could return it for up to 90 days. So far we love it. We had a 37" LCD and I like the Plasma much better. For what we paid, we got everything we wanted. There is no way we could have purchased a 52" LCD or LED for $620. More like $2000 and up. We bought our TV for less than what we would have paid for a 37" LCD or LED.
And I will say we were both skeptics of the Plasma because so many rumors about them burning out early, etc... Which isn't true. So as two people very against a plasma, not even wanting to consider it, we are glad we did.
The Panasonic Viera is also rated in the top 5 in CR too.
I will also say we were very happy with our LG 37" LCD before it crapped out and we also have a 32" Vizio LCD in the bedroom that we like too.
You really just need to go into an electronics store and compare them all, some brands have better pictures than others, better color, etc... It is hard to tell from just looking online. Like I said we went to Costco with the intent of purchasing another 37" LCD or a 42" LCD and walked out with the complete opposite.
OMG! ok I did not read anyone else but we just *squeel* bought ours yesterday!!!!
We ended up choosing a 42' LG LCD. and it was $499. (Home Theater Solutions...but they are a local company here in Toledo. We got a crazy good deal because we know a guy who is best friends with the owner.
There are a couple others we considered:
Right now as in this week before black friday
Best Buy and Sears have a 40' LCD Samsung for $497
Also We look at a Sony at Costco that was $539 I think it was 42' LCD.
Target I know has a BF special but I'm not waking up at the crack of dawn to save $100. It's not worth the lines or the waiting to possibly not get one to me...haha
Good Luck! Let us know what you decide
btw ditto Jill and Plasma. We looked for a couple weeks and actually went to buy a plasma because they are a little cheaper (sometimes).
We were also looking to try and get a 720p instead of 1080p. (the one we got is a 1080p)
For timot and I: We do not have cable. We get all our shows online over the internet. The converter box we use (btw worth it's weight in GOLD $30 and we've been using it for almost 6 months...SO MUCH MONEY SAVED!) only outputs at 720p so we didn't think to get the 1080p was worth it for us because currently everything is output at 720 anyways.
*phew* I know right. So much crap to consider!
We recently purchased a Samsung LED and I would highly recommend it. We almost went with a Sharp, but ended up with the Samsung because the ratings are better. (I think it's this one, or something very similar, hah... http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05771131000P?prdNo=1&blockNo=1&blockType=L1)
We previously had a Plasma, and it crapped out on us after 4 years, BUT we bought a floor model at a discount, so we knew that it wouldn't last as long. It also got really freaking hot though, and that was annoying. I think the newer Plasmas are better with that though.
I'd definitely choose a Plasma or LED over an LCD.
And while Jill is technically correct that an LED is just an LCD with different lighting, it's really much more than that. An LED uses LED lighting vs. fluorescent lighting which means energy savings, longer bulb life and a much thinner TV.
As for size, we had a 42 before and went up to a 46, and I still wouldn't mind it being bigger, lol. I think that for an average sized room, somewhere in the 46"-52" range is great.
You'll also want to be sure to get one that's 1080p, and I personally wouldn't go for anything less than 120hz.
And I should add that my recommendations are coming from my own preferences too. We enjoy watching lots of HD programming (esp. sports), blu-ray movies, etc. So some things that are important to us may not be as important to you.
We were very worried the Plasma wasn't 1080p but Buckeye doesn't even have 1080p, the guy told us that when you call Buckeye and ask them if they have 1080p and they will tell you they have 1080i and 1080i is 720p. So after that we felt a lot better that even if we did get 1080p that Buckeye doesn't have it, so we wouldn't get it anyways, LOL. Our plasma is 720p, we just couldn't beat that price, haha.
So it is a good idea to maybe check with your cable provider to and see if they truly have 1080p.
I also should add he did say if we watched a lot of blu ray or DVDs that were HD we would notice a slight difference having 720p, but we are not movie people so it wasn't a big deal for us. So that would be a factor too in 1080p v 720p, the kind of stuff you watch. We strictly just watch TV (cable) and since our provider doesn't broadcast 1080p we didn't care. If we were big movie people we would have re-considered.
We got a 52" plasma last fall and love it.
We originally went in to purchase an LED, but the selling point for us with the plasma was mentioning that we had kids and we were worried about the plasma getting busted if a ball hits it or something.
The guy showed us the difference between the actual screens on the plasma vs. LED/LCD and the plasma's actually stand up better apparently to getting knocked and hit.
We've had no problems with it and would buy another one in a heartbeat!
We are buying a 55 LED on BF at BB.
We were going to get the 46" LED, but we both thought it was too small for our LR. We have a giant LR with lots of windows, which is why we want a LED vs a LCD. Plus god forbid we get something that has been out on the market for more than 5 years. the price tag on the 55" makes my skin crawl, but we have had our current tv for going on 12 years now and paid over $2K for that one.
B did all the research so I am of no help. I just wanted a say in the matter.
DH doesn't really want to spend the money, but I can't take it anymore! My 36" tv (the tube kind) died and then someone gave me their 27" one. It worked just fine until we moved. Our FR is something like 21x22, so the tv is just waaay too small.
Angi ~ what time are you going to BB on BF? I just might see you there.. lol. Did you see that in some state, not OH, they started camping out a couple days ago.. crazy!
I plan on getting there at 3am. to the one on Airport Hwy.
Which one are you going to?
There is one on Rt. 20. It in the same strip as Lowes & Kohls, just down a little ways...it's almost hidden.
We have a Samsung LCD and haven't had a single issue (knock on wood, haha) and my in-laws have two Samsungs as well. My mom has an LG and again, no issues at all. They are all 1080p. I would not go back, lol. And with how cheap they are anymore, totally worth it.

Wedding Planning Bio!! My Married Bio!!
**Update** So, DH decided he better look into this since I have decided that we will be getting one for use. For the size of our room, they recommend no smaller then a 64 inch!!! LOL.. I have no idea how that would work as we only 55 between the windows on the wall it would go on.. LOL, oh what a mess! So, has anyone seen a tv in the bf ads larger then 64"?
The sizes they give are actually diagonal and not across. (At least ours was). it's only lighter bigger and we went from a 27-42. it's bigger don't get me wrong but it's not ginormous.
I have the consumer reports book. If I think about it tonight I will look up what they say for over 55'.
I logged on to the CR website, and it looks like Samsung has the most consistent high ratings in the categories I looked at.
Their recommendations for a large size like that would be the Samsung PN58C550 Plasma (58") or the Samsung PN63C550 Plasma (63"). [Let me know if you want any further details from their reviews.] As a note, the 58" model is 55" across, so that might be the way to go if you want it to fit between the windows.
There seem to be some pretty good prices on that model too: http://electronics.pricegrabber.com/plasma-lcd-televisions/Samsung-58-Series-5-Black-Flat-Panel-Plasma/m770361314.html/search=pn58c550/st=product/sv=button
Oh, and they don't have a ton of LED models rated, but the Samsungs and Sonys seem to be the highest in that category.
They recommend the Samsung UN55C8000, and that's a 55" model. Or the Sony Bravia KDL-52NX800, and that's a 52" model.
Don't forget places like Sam's and Costco if you are a member
)
Our TV is over $800 at all other stores and we paid $620 at Costco.
Good idea. We only belong to BJ's and I don't think there is one of those around there (is there?). But if one of the other clubs has a good enough deal going on, we could always join for a year.
This is the one we are planning on getting at BB on BF. They have it on sale for $1499.00. So I think with the cables and callorbation setup, we can get it for around $2K.
That's a really good price!!! How exciting!

Oh, and if you're looking for HDMI cables, don't buy them from BB. You can get a 6ft cable on Amazon for like $3 and it works just as well.
