Is this a good idea for a holiday party?

My husband and I have a holiday cocktail party pretty much every year. This year, I want to have a wine tasting party. Optionally, people can bring a bottle to share. We'll have a few bottles, too, as well as holiday beer and a full bar, as always. Would you like this? I just get nervous because I never ask people to bring anything - I always plan all the food and drinks.

Of course, I don't know what people will bring, but here are some food ideas I have (party will start at 9):

various chocolates (salted caramel chocolate, milk and dark truffles, etc)

various cheese w/ bread (bleu, hard, goat, sheep, maybe something w/ fruit or herbs as well)

baked brie

stuffed endive

chips and pretzels w/ homemade sour cream dip

holiday cookies

maybe a fruit or vegetable platter

My husband wants to start earlier (like 8) in case people have other parties to go to, but I don't think that's necessary. We also tend to eat late, and while I plan a lot of snacks, I don't want people to think there will be pizza or sandwiches. Thoughts and comments?

Re: Is this a good idea for a holiday party?

  • If it's a wine tasting party, I'd put on the invite for everyone to bring their favorite unusual wine.  Making bringing wine optional and you only having a "couple bottles" doesn't seem like a recipe for success.

For your food, I like the idea of cheese and crackers better than cheese and bread.  I would include veggies and dip; I don't think fruit is necessary.  I think chips are a bit too casual for a wine tasting party; stick with the pretzels.  I think something like bruschetta would be a welcome addition.

I'm with your husband for 8pm.  I'm normally putting on my pjs around 9pm, even on a weekend lol  At 8pm I certainly wouldn't be expecting pizza or sandwiches, but I don't live in Hollywood and maybe that's dinnertime there.

  • I like the idea but like TarHeels said, I'd ask everyone to bring a bottle of wine they'd love to try--then you're sure to have enough.

I'd add a shrimp app (just shrimp cocktail would do) to add a protein and a little more formality to it.

I'd also go with 8 pm.

    Have fun!

  • Thanks! I guess I don't want people to think they can't come if they can't pick up a bottle. But maybe they'll just talk to me privately. I'm just thinking about a good friend who has money issues, but I can't believe she'd think she wouldn't be welcome if she comes empty handed. I'll take the chips out and move it to 8. Our dinner time is more determined by our work schedules than what most people do, I think!

But would a $10 bottle of wine really keep someone from attending?

Like I said, I doubt it, she's one of my best friends. She just literally can't afford a $10 bottle of wine right now.

  • I love the wine-tasting idea!  Just to throw it out there... My sister in law recently hosted a "Cheap Wine Tasting Party".  Guests had to bring the cheapest bottle of wine they could find.  During the tasting, guests were supposed to describe the wines in a snobby way, but of course the wines were terrible!  Descriptions included "It's rancid cat piss with a hint of raspberry."  Or "A delightful blend of squirrel fart undertones."  Needless to say, hilarity ensued.  :)

That's hilarious. I lie about 2 blocks from a Trader Joes, so I'm sure we'd just end up with a ton of two buck chuck! One of my friends already wants to bring mulling spices for any cheap wine that comes in.

  • 8 is right in the middle of time for other parties, if people have other parties to attend. parties usually start at 7 end at 11....could you do a little earlier or do a post-party party?
  • I love this idea and would definitely attend but then again, I love wine!

  • If you are having a wine-tasting party, there is really no need for a full bar.  Maybe a bottle of vodka and some mixers, but the focus should be on the wine.

8:00 is a better time to start a party.
