gift for "distant" grandmother

My stepmom's mom who has lived in southern KY (about 4 hours away) my entire life has moved in with my dad and stepmom, temporarily.  She actually has advanced colon cancer and came to live with them so that my stepmom could take her to a decent hospital and doctors for treatment.  She has been up here since this summer and has taken over my dad/stepmom's bedroom.  It basically is her bedroom now.  My dad actually took it upon himself to build an in-law suite in the walkout basement but he and my stepmom live there.

Saying that, she is up here temporarily (assuming she gets better) and most of her belongings are still at her house in southern KY.  What do I get her for Christmas? She doesn't go anywhere, unless my stepmom takes her, and now that she's undergoing chemo she may not feel like leaving the house.  I'm at a complete loss.

Re: gift for "distant" grandmother

  • Why not ask family members for photos, load them onto a digital picture frame, and give her that? It might help her feel more at home, and would give her something to look at if she can't go out.
  • that is a tough one.  i like the idea mentioned above about photos and such.  another option may be something she would use around the house....a snuggie, if there isn't one in "her" bedroom maybe a dvd player and a few movies she likes, gift card to somewhere she can buy books (or order online if she doesnt feel like going anywhere)....perhaps slippers/a robe/comfy clothes for around the house.  my boyfriend's mom just underwent chemo for breast cancer and is still incredibly fatigued and just drained.  we are planning to get them a big flat screen tv (to replace the one they have that is probably as old as i am) for x-mas since she spends so much time at home....(assuming we can handle the crowds on black friday to get one at a really good price.)
  • I'd get her a book or two.
