No bananas superstition

Have you ever heard that it is bad luck to have a banana on a boat?

We just booked a 2-tank scuba dive with Waikiki Diving Center (thanks, groupon addiction). Typically, you dive... come back up... have lunch on the boat... then, go on the second dive. The guy was telling me that we could bring food on the boat. He adds, "Just no bananas". What? He said it's considered bad luck.

There are just so many funny things that come to mind...

Re: No bananas superstition

  • Hmmm... Never heard of it. Interesting though. I wonder how the superstition started?

  • i've never heard of that either? maybe someone slipped off a boat once because of the peel ;)
  • I never heard of this, but I just asked MH who is a boater/fisher, he says "Yeah!  Don't bring bananas on a boat!  Especially the green ones...the green ones are the worst!"  When I asked why, he just said it's a superstition...wasn't sure what the story behind it was...

  • Weird - I've never heard that.  But that's very good to know - I can be a little superstitious.  Hopefully I remember this next time I go on a boat.

(Side note: I've never been a cruise but I wonder if they have bananas/offer bananas at any of the eateries onboard?)

  • I was watching Sarah Palin's Alaska (yeah, I know...another topic in itself...), and they were on a fishing boat.  They had flowers for her, but they couldn't leave it on the boat.  Also, they won't leave the dock on a Friday.

  • I never heard of it either UNTIL I went on a deep sea fishing charter boat with MH. Well we (he did) brought a banana by accident I guess he forgot about the superstition. We were fishing for FOUR hours and did not catch a single fish not even a bite. I mean the entire boat was fishless. When we got home my husband said 'Look a banana." Then he went on to tell me about the superstition regarding bananas and fishing. Thank goodness we did not pull it out to eat it.

Okay I had to look it up and found this:

According to this, it's even more so superstitious in Hawaii.

Haha, yeah, me too.  It is even funnier in person because he is so serious about it!
