Help me W/ My Ornaments Old and New

So, these are all of our Christmas Ornaments.  I thought we had more. Must have gotten lost with the move. Anyways, here are the ornaments. I think they are two totally different styles. I would like to have a more cohesive tree. Even if that means not using MANY of the ornaments and (or) returning some of the ornaments from Pier1. I Do like the do like the ones from Pier1. I almost feel like they are too busy.

Re: Help me W/ My Ornaments Old and New

  • I see the two styles, but they could all work together.  Use white lights and then balance the tree with sparkly and matte ornaments all over.  You have some color patterns that will make they all work together.

  • I say use them.  If they make you happy, put them up!

We have two trees - 1 is 9 ft in the living room with a red, gold, berry theme.  The other is upstairs and is 6 ft in the bonus room.  It holds all the ornaments we've collected over our almost 7 years of marriage.  I love the memories with the ornaments.

  • There are two different styles there.  I'm not sure what answer you're looking for.  Do you want to hear yes or no?  Yes, you can put them together.  It's your tree, do what you want.  But if we were talking about anything else, accessories in a room perhaps, the answer would be that the two different styles don't go and shouldn't be used together.

Your first set of ornaments looks much like what everyone in the country has: cute little snowmen and bears and Santas in red and white.  The second set is decidedly different, with modern colors and glitter.

I think someone else's suggestion of two trees is a good one.  Growing up mom had a very sophisticated tree in the formal LR with white lights and burgundy and gold.  I had forgotten until now that she had a second tree in the family room with colored lights and all of my ornaments.  Do two trees.  If you don't want to do two trees, consider putting the Pier 1 ornaments in a bowl on the dining room table or in the foyer.

  • I think you have a lot of similar colors; but not styles.  Most trees are mishmashed and not really "themed"  If you're liking the Pier 1 sparkly ones better - use those and some of the sparklier old ornaments.  Walmart has a row or two of $1 ornaments that are super adorable and sparkly too f you need to fill in.

  • I will repeat what I wrote in the post below.  Stop overthinking it.  It's a Christmas tree, not a fashion statement.
  • I agree with many of the previous posters: You have  a few choices. First choice, put all of the ornaments on the tree with some white lights and enjoy your tree! Here's my thought, I hung several paintings in my living room that each have wonderful meaning to SO and me. The paintings have very little in common, but we love each of them. It's amazing how they really work together. I think the same thing can be true for a Christmas tree. What you put on it should have meaning to you and your family. They will all work together.

Second choice: you could choose to do a themed tree. I do a small theme tree every year. I bought several nice gold, silver and white Christmas balls. Then I rotate them with a ornaments that fit a color theme. You have many red and green ornaments, and several light blue. Red and green both look great with gold and silver. The light blue would look great with white and silver. Purchasing simple Christmas balls in basic colors allows your other ornaments to standout.

Third choice:  Have a few small trees! When I had a larger place I had three trees. One was silver and red, one was sage green, ivory and gold and the small one in the kitchen was colorful and had some fun ornaments from when I was kid.

    Have fun!

  • I totally think they work together...if you want them to. Do I see different styles? Sure. But I think a tree full of only the glittery ornaments will be too much. As others have said, the tree should be the tree YOU love. If you love all of the ornaments, they'll work.
  • I'm going to agree with everyone else I think they could all work together on a tree, it would make it look more like each ornament had a meaning to you guys, then "each year i have to buy ALL new ones and can't have the same ones twice" to me  the different collection of them just add an extra touch. we do our tree in the same ones every year, just add one new one each year.

  • My  husband and I got Christmas ornaments every year when we were living at home and now we have our own Christmas tree to decorate.  He is a huge sports fanatic so needless to say his sports ornaments don't exactly fit our Red, White, Silver theme.  However... my thought for the Tree is to keep the lights and garland and several new bulbs that fit the theme and then supplement with all the other ornaments.  The lights and garland are what really stand out anyway.
