Florida Hospital Pediatrics

Can anyone tell me a little about the peds department at the Florida Hospital South (downtown)? My son is having surgery there next Friday and I'm not sure what to expect. He was in the NICU there but I never saw the pediatrics unit. Can parents stay in a room with their kids? Are the rooms private? Do they give you a bathroom/shower to use and food to eat?

We wanted to do the surgery at Arnold Palmer but our surgeon couldn't do it there because of politics or something.

 Any advice would be appreciated!

Re: Florida Hospital Pediatrics

  • I've visited patients there before, but not babies, so i don;t know how helpful this info will be.

But, the room my client was in was very small... there is a small couch in there but not big enough to sleep on....

now they may have a different area for babies -- the girl i visited was 8.

sorry i can't be more helpful.... sending good thoughts your way, hoping the surgery is a success!

  • Are you going to be at the Childrens hospital there? Here is a link the the Florida hospital website: http://www.flhosp.org/ and a link to the Disney Childrens Hopsital: http://www.disneychildrenshospital.com/

My sister delivered at South and I stayed overnight with her on a little fold out couch. I'm sure they allow that there too....

    Hope that helps. Good luck!

I used to work at Florida Hospital South before moving to Texas to last year. It's a wonderful hospital. The Peds floor was great and that was before they did all the new renovations and turned it into the Disney Childrens Hospital.

Their website is great. There's a section of "What to Expect". And if you have any additional questions, I'd call them directly. I'm sure without a doubt they'd answer any questions.

  • Thank you ladies so much for your responses, I will check out the website.
  • Hey Jenn!  Just wanted to tell you again that Nate looks great!  I love his eyes.  As far as the Peds floor versus the NICU . . do you know if he'll be in the PICU after his surgery or just on the Peds floor?  In general, the visitation policy on "the floor" (aka not an ICU) is much more lenient and especially in Peds they tend to include beds and facilities to allow at least one parent to spend the night.  It may not be comfortable, but it's there.  If he will be in an ICU, I bet their visitation policy will be similar to the NICU but where I've worked, parents are allowed to spend the night in the Peds ICU.  There may not be a place to sleep.  I've never been on those floors, so I can't tell you about decor, bed size, bathroom size, etc.  Maybe you could call and speak with someone about their visitation policy and ask if you could visit.  Hopefully, with all the renovations, they will have a place for parents.

  • Thanks Layne! I will probably give them a call today to see what the policies are. Basically I am staying there no matter what, if I have to sleep standing up I will. I think the plan is for him to stay in the PICU after surgery until he is stable, maybe 24 hours and then move to the Peds floor. I am thinking of getting an air mattress and just setting up camp. It's not like the NICU this time, he'll need to see me and not strangers around him, so I don't feel like I have a choice but to stay. Argh, I am not looking forward to this at all :(
  • No information on the hospital but I wanted to wish you guys luck.  Your little guy is adorable.
