I asked a few days ago about what to bring for a hostess present and someone suggested apple cider. I asked my friend (going to her grandma's house) if that would be a good thing to bring and she looked at me like I had 6 heads. She said her family would probably drink it, but it seemed like she had never heard of it or had it.
So I guess I should change my plans... would a mum or poinsettia be an ok gift?
My mom made a good point that my friend might have thought apple cider was alcoholic (I guess cider normally means booze in the south??, I'm from New England so this is not what I meant!) and her family is very anti-booze.
Re: Updated Hostess Present Question
Your original thread mentioned you baking something. I think that's a better idea than anything else.
I believe plants are a good gift only if know the recipient enjoys gardening, otherwise I think hostess gifts should be bouquets of flowers or a flower arrangement. And does she have cats? I think poinsettias are harmful to cats?
I've lived here all my life and while, yes, there's hard cider that's like beer, that's not what "cider" means. We're familiar with cider. And I agree that cider seems a very peculiar gift.
And ditto the last poster who said baking is the way to go. A coffee cake or pound cake will last for a week and are pretty much universally liked.
Poinsettias actually aren't poisonous; it's just an urban legend.
