Any Chicago attorneys?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to Chicago -- DH and I moved here from Baltimore at the beginning of September.  We're thrilled to be here :)

I'm a recent law school grad (just found out that I passed the bar! Yay!) and I'm looking for a job in litigation, either in the public or private sector.  If any of you are attorneys or have any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it!  I'm starting to get a little desperate!!!

Thanks!

Liz

Re: Any Chicago attorneys?

  • Congratulations on passing the bar! I know the pain of the attorney job hunt---my husband is an attorney, and it was not fun (then again, he wasn't nearly as diligent as a lot of people are and was very anti-big-firm). He got a criminal law certificate in law school, but does wills/trusts/small business law now.

He worked with some good legal placement firms, but I can't remember their names off hand. If you'd be interested in getting the contact information, I can ask him tonight. He also had some luck networking at the local bar association events.

     Good luck in your search!

  • Can't help much with the job search but wanted to say welcome to the area!
  • Have you tried the State's Attorney's Office or Public Defender's office in your county?  I think Cook county has a resident restriction, but I know for a fact that you can live out of the county and work for the Will County SAO.  You might want to see if they are hiring...

  • Thanks, ladies.  I appreciate the input!

Kristi, if you could let me know what placement agencies you husband worked with, that would be great.  Thanks again :)

  • He had the best luck with Special Counsel. He had to nag them for a bit to get his first contract job, but then they kept coming back to him.
  • I'm in law school right now.  I just attended a "Rainmaking" seminar last week given by a legal "head hunter."  His name is Mark Evers and his website is everslegal.com.  He or his staff may be able to give you some helpful information to get started on.

I would also contact your law school's career services and get in contact with any alumni that could be here in the Chicagoland area and give them a call or email to see if they can help you out.  Also check your school's career services for possible connections into the local lawschools here in Chicago and their career resources departments.  Lots of times law schools are willing to "trade" career resources for law grads that have moved into town.

Next, I would either try the Illinois Bar Association or maybe the Cook or Will County or Chicago Bar Associations.  If you are a member, or prospective member, they are usually helpful in the search for a job.

I would also search online postings.  There are lots of sites that are tailored just for attorneys and legal professionals.

     Hope this helps.  Good luck!
