DIY Christmas Gifts?

Hi All - My husband and I are starting to brainstorm about ways to save on Christmas gifts without being impersonal.  Does anyone have any good ideas for DIY gifts for the holiday?  Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Re: DIY Christmas Gifts?

  • I got xmas mugs from the Goodwill, like-new condition for 50cents a piece. Obviously I am going to wash them out, and then depending on the person I am going to fill them with a small bag of coffee, tea, hot coco, or chocolate covered pretzels(that I will make.) I will "wrap" the whole thing in a clear goodie bag or you can get xmas decorated goodie bags.

It's affordable and a great way to reuse items that would have been thrown out.

Edit: Just to add, for couples I am putting two mugs in baskets that I also found at Goodwill for about a dollar a piece. Then I am placing the coffee or whatever item in the basket with the mugs. Just another idea.

  • rice bag warm compresses :)

you can choose your fabric then you can just add some cute votive candles and aromatherapeutic scents/oils of your choice.

  • if you can tolerate cross stitch there are small ones you can do with xmas themes.  some fit into card stock (that it comes with) others fit into mini plastic frames (that they come with).

i've done these in the past and they are usually appreciated.  it's something you made for someone, only takes a few hours to do and are cute.  they show you put some effort into your gift.  but even if they aren't of the taste of the person they are not required to display them year round to make you feel better.  plus, most are only a couple bucks each at most.

  • i'm considering doing those drink candles...i don't know if you've seen them and make them personal for each person. Example: my father in law is a big beer drinker so you get a beer mug and go to a craft store in the "make your own candles" section there are usually these different colored gels to make your own gel candles. (the gel acts as wax) so basically you would take the beer mug, get like a golden colored gel and a long wick and voila! it looks like beer. I'll probably do like a martini for MIL. you can do whatever kind of drink, I've seen like cherry cokes and you get a wax cherry. they're really cute and are usually like 20 bucks a pop at the mall.
