What name should I put on my degree?

So I graduated from college, got married and I finish law school in December.

Should I put my married name on my law degree or should I put my maiden name?

My maiden name is on my other degrees and I thought that it would be kinda neat to have it on my law degree also - plus I thought that it would be neat for my parents (I am the first person in all my family to have a graduate degree). I was also planning at graduation to be announced by my maiden name.

DH doesn't really care about - plus he already has his law degree.

What do you think?

Re: What name should I put on my degree?

  • Well on my other degree I have my maiden name because it was before my wedding, but on my current degree I have my Married last name, but I think on my RN degree when I get it I will have both maiden-married as a tribute to both of my lives.

?So what if you put both? ?To represent who you are now.?

But if you want maiden and DH is cool with it then go for maiden.?

  • if it were me I'd put my married name, but i really like the say Shelly worded it. I think a tribute to both lives sounds so great.

GL in whatever decision you make!

    oh and CONGRATS!

  • I have my maiden names on both BS and CPA.  I got the two as before DH, but if I had a choice, I would have stuck with my maiden name anyway.  It's a tribute to my parents, for having put me through undergrad and for supporting/cheering me on to earn my CPA.

I had inquired about changing my name for CPA after I got married and they informed me that I could order a new certificate with new married name.  The fee was $10.  That was is, I thought.  Oh brother!  And after all the turmoil to achieve that license...they only asked $10.  I almost felt like it was a lousy vending machine charge, if you get what I mean.  Oh, sorry for my rambling.

    Good luck!

  • I had my married name put on my graduate degree because I was married when I did the majority of the work (and when I graduated). Additionally, it was then easier to take my certification boards without having to worry about the names not matching.
