Towns to visit on vacation to NH?
A friend and I are going to be in NH/VT from Oct 17-21st and would like recommendations on what drives to take, towns to visit, places to stay. We will be in Boston for a couple of days prior so we would like to see cute towns with good shops but also some nightlife. We were planning on driving the Kancamagus Hwy, will it still be colorful that late into the season?
Re: Towns to visit on vacation to NH?
Definitely check out Portsmouth, lots of cute shops and excellent restaurants! Not sure which part of Vt. you'll be in but if your in western NH I think the pumpkin Fest in Keene might be that weekend. Keene is also a cute town, very small and close to VT.
Gook Luck!
If you go to the Lakes Region area . . . I'll recommend a drive though some cute towns. And you can head to the Kanc Hwy from there.
Take 93N, exit 23 (route 104), turn right towards Meredith. (On your way up 93, you can stop in Canterbury at the Shaker Village which is --IMOH--one of best historic villages/museums with a great restaurant. If you can get a tour with Darryl Thompson--I think that's his name--do it! He grew up there & made it is life's work to study the Shakers).
Go about 10 miles, 104 ends at route 3, take a left. Down the hill into the town of Meredith.
Meredith has a really nice inn & spa (Church Landing) & some good restaurants (Lago's, George's Diner for breakfast or quick lunch, Abondante, etc). There's also an old converted mill that has cute shops. Worth getting out of the car & walking around a little bit.
In the town of Meredith, take a right onto route 25 (towards Center Harbor & the White Mountains).
In about 2 miles, you'll pass Moulton Farms on the right. This is quite a farm stand with oodles of pumpkins & a corn maze.
Continue onto to Center Harbor (they have a huge quilt store if you are into that). Canoe is a really good restaurant--have the calamari.
Take a left at the 2nd light (Bean Road, towards Sandwich).
Sandwich used to be one of the biggest towns in NH till one of it's own was one of the 1st to discover gold in the 1849 gold rush. So most of the residents, dropped their plows & headed West. The Corner House Inn is one of my favorite places to eat. Eat upstairs in the bar.
Turn right onto 109 (towards Moultonborough).
You'll end up in Moultonborough at the Old Country Store--go in. They claim it's the oldest continually run business in America. I think I've met everyone who ran for President this year campaigning there. It's a popular spot.
Turn left onto route 25 & you are headed to the White Mountains & the Kanc Hwy.
