DSLR camera question for ya....

Total beginner here...

Are these cameras like the digital point and shoot where you can take a picture using the large screen or the viewfinder? OR do you take the picture with the viewfinder then review on the large screen?

Thanks!

Re: DSLR camera question for ya....

  • On our Canon Rebel XTI you have to use the viewfinder (unless I don't know something, still learning, lol), and then you can review it on the lcd screen.

Not sure about other brands/models...but I think you have to use the viewfinder.

Yeah, I've used a couple different Canon DSLRs (currently own one of the original Digital Rebels, but lusting after a 7D), and all of them have been like this.

You could go ask on the photography board over on The Bump and they might be able to give you a wider range of answers: http://community.thebump.com/cs/ks/forums/7253063/ShowForum.aspx.

  • I agree with PPs, most make you use the viewfinder. That is how the D3000 is. You can have it always show you the photo you took, or skip it totally to save battery power. I believe the D5000 that has the video capability will show you the image live on the screen as well if you prefer that.

  • I think for most you have to look through the view finder, but a few of the newer models have live image.  I'm pretty sure that the Canon T2i has live image, though it's fairly pricey.

  • Some of the newer cameras have live view (ie you can see the shot on the LCD while you are composing it), but honestly it is better to use the viewfinder, less battery power usage and it puts you in a more stable posture to help you get a sharper image.
