Anyone familiar with Grand Canyon Univeristy Area??

My cousin is looking to go to Grand Canyon University next year and she found an apartment close to school and is wondering what the area is like. I believe I saw it's by 29th Ave and Camelback. I'm not familiar with this area at all. She is a single mom with a 2 1/2 year old. Is this a safe place for her or what would be a good and affordable area for her near the school? Thanks ladies!

Re: Anyone familiar with Grand Canyon Univeristy Area??

  • I live off 27th Ave and Camelback so its a few blocks away from GCU.  I wouldn't call this the safest area, definitely is more ghetto.  The crime rate is high enough that there are cops constantly in the neighborhoods....waiting for stuff to happen I guess since most of them are in parked cars.  I don't take walks in the neighborhood by myself either.  However, I've been living here for 5 years, I do have an alarm system and it has never been set off and I've never had to call the cops for anything.  There is a nearby park that the transients do hang out in, but on weekends I do see big family gatherings.  Now things may be a little different being right on top of the school and in an apartment with other students.  There is convenient shopping and fast food nearby and it is really close to the freeway.  But safety wise....my husband and I are expecting our first kiddo in a few weeks and we've been actively looking to move away because of the neighborhood.  Phoenix is so patchy with good and bad areas to live in, if she can drive a little it'd probably be better to move a little more east or north to be in better neighborhoods.  Hope this helps a little....sorry I couldn't say more positives about the area.
