DSLR filters

I bought DH a Nikkon d3100 for Christmas. Do I need to buy a UV filter? Are there other accessories that he really needs for the camera or can additional items be purchased later as upgrades?

 TIA

Re: DSLR filters

  • I just bought a new camera as well, and the salesperson talked me into buying a UV filter mainly to protect the lens from scratching.  It's a lot cheaper to replace a $10 UV filter than an entire lens.

Aside from that, I got a nice bag, a memory card and an extra lens.  The lens came as part of a package, otherwise I probably would have skipped that until another time.

  • Definitely get a UV filter. You can get them really cheap on Amazon. And, PP has a good suggestion with a memory card - my D3000 didn't come with one. Everything else can be bought later.

  • You don't NEED a uv filter though a lot of people use them to protect their lenses (I personally don't and I have yet to ruin a lens in 4.5 years).  That said if you do decide to get one please don't get a cheap $10 one, you are just going to degrade your image quality.  Look for a higher quality one, especially if you get higher quality lenses in the future.

This.  I never understood people that pay $600 for a lens, then put a crappy $10 filter on it. It just degrades the image quality, might as well not spend money on the lens.  Brands to look at are Heliopan and Hoya.  Not cheap, but if you're going to use one it's best to get one that won't degrade image quality.
