Given Jos's age of 3 and her fractured tibia injury, would you think that Jos needs to go to physical therapy?
The ortho today seemed on the fence about giving us a referral/prescription for physical therapy. I think he didn't think that we needed to have someone work with her to, as he put it, "learn to walk". It actually wasn't until one of his nurses/pa's suggested that it wouldn't hurt since we have ppo...whatever, I'll let it slide.
So, at first Dan and I were thinking that she wouldn't need it; 1-2x a week for the next month. But having spent the rest of the day with her in her new cast, I think Jos may have some mixed reactions. I know she hasn't put weight on the leg since Sunday morning before the accident. She calls her leg her "owie", but I'm not sure if she's trying to make excuses to continue to be carried around. I'm working with her on standing, favoring her good leg. I'm also working with her to step-scoot walk. I'm sure I just need to give her more time and to be realistic with my expectations.
Does anyone have any suggestions? TIA
Re: Need advise! re: Jos + physical therapy
I don't have any medical background so I'm going strictly on mommy wisdom here. If it were Rhian in this situation, I think I would take her to PT. It's going to be a long few weeks in that cast and Jos needs to learn how to be semi-independant in it. Not only that, but I would want her getting some extra movement to offset the loss of muscle tone that usually comes with being in a cast.
Mia,
She might also respond better to someone else working with her. While you are a GREAT and amazing mom, she knows she can guilt you into carrying her. The therapist will help her be more independant because she can't play a sympathy card with them.
Good luck!!
A friend's DS who was in a cast for 8 weeks required PT after to re-learn how to walk.
But my friend Corrie's DD was 3.5 when she broke her leg and didn't require PT after having a cast for 7 weeks. Her doctor said to give her 2 weeks to re-learn how to walk and use it again, and if it wasn't happening, he would refer her for PT. But she did just fine.
I guess it just depends on the child? Poor kiddo!!

Emily - ortho said to go now to learn how to walk WITH the cast. I haven't really thought of after the cast comes off, but I'm sure that would be a good idea too.
