Help me decorate our (hopefully) new house!

I need to figure out what colors to paint because we want to get it painted before we move in.  What color would you paint these rooms (kitchen, living room)  They are sort of all one big room.  Also, we are buying new living room furniture.  I am thinking either a dark brown or dark green color.

  • Honestly I'd wait til you're in the house to decide. So many paint colors look different in different lighting and you also want to take your time and get use to the house before deciding for certain!

    Speaking hypothetically...

I like light colored sofas, we had brown and I HATED how dark it made the room, it's like it sucked all the light out!

I'm also on the D&R bandwagon  and love anything grey or griege for paint colors.

Do you follow any decor blogs? I have about 80 in my reader and they are GREAT for inspiration!

  • No!  Please send me some links if you can, i'll put them in my google reader!

    What color is griege??

I'm scared to get a light colored sofa because of the dog, and hopefully kids soon..... not sure what to do about that.  We have awful black leather couches now, that DH bought in his bachelor days and I HATE them, so anything would have to be better! :)

  • I have dk olive green sofas, H likes to say they are chocolate brown (but they are olive). I like the color, but I kind of hate them in my living room. Like CPH said.... they darken the room a lot. We have the walls painted Khaki (similar to your photos) because anything darker would be too much against the sofas. My neighbors have a modern white leather sectional and I am IN LOVE. Their house looks like something straight out of a Pottery Barn magazine cover.

  • Love the new place, I hope you get it! It actually looks like you get a lot oflight in there already, so I wouldnt worry too much about the color of the sofas being dark.  We have cabinets in a similar color to yours, just a tad lighter and our walls are a khaki color, probably just a shade or two darker than you already have.  I love love love it, because then you can decorate any way you want and change it up from time to time and not have to worry about painting again.  We dont get a lot of light in our kitchen and family room, and we also have lamiante floors, a carpet with dark  muted colors and our coach is chocolate brown.  I'd be weary of a sofa that was light because of my dogs and my son.  The sofa we had before we a light navy color, and although it did hide things pretty well, you could still see many stains on it and it looked so dirty by the time we got our new sofa.
  • Congratulations!!

I'm going to second waiting until you're in the space before painting.  Yes, painting is easier when there's no furniture in the space, but paint changes in different light and with different furniture.

Another thing to consider is the color of the granite.  Is it Uba Tuba?  If so, it has green in it.  We're putting Uba Tuba in our house (it wasn't my first choice but DH loved it, and it's about compromise Smile) and the one thing I don't want to do is excentuate the green - so I'm going to find paint and furnishing that have more of a grayish undertone than greenish.

My suggestion is start collecting inspiration pics to get a feel for what you like.  These are two sites that have great images to browse through.
