Clicky Poll: How honest of a shopper are you?

So, I went to the Gap today to buy DH a Xmas day outfit: a pair of jeans for $80, and a sweater for $60. They had a deal going on, buy one, get a lesser one for 60% off. The total came to $87.something, but I didn't clue in till I was checking my receipt on the way out: the cashier rang me up for 2 sweaters instead of 1 sweater and 1 pants.

Would you go back and say something, or score the savings?

Re: Clicky Poll: How honest of a shopper are you?

  • On Saturday we bought our Xmas tree at Lowe's.  We had to pick it up later that day because we didn't have a truck to bring the tree home.  When we went back that night I decided to buy a tree for my aunt and younger cousins.  I picked out the tree and told the worker that I wanted the tree.  He wrapped it and gives it to us and tells us to have a good night. But we hadn't paid for it.  So I told him that we didn't pay for the second tree.  I wouldn't have forgiven myself if I had been dishonest and taken the second tree without paying for it.

  • With something like that, and not a huge deal, I wouldn't have said anything.  If it was completely free, I would have.  I've been to lots of stores where they ring you up oddly in an attempt to save you money; is it possible that's what happened?  After all, if stores are willing to try and save you as much as they reasonably can, you'll come back and spend more there (or so goes the thinking).  If you feel really bad, why not go and spend what you "owe" them on more merchandise if you can't get the receipt corrected?

  • If I am at the register and I notice I say something; already out the door I likely wouldn't

The only thing is if you think the pants might have to be returned for some reason you will need a receipt and you don't have that and it would be tough to explain a month from now.

  • This happened to me last year at Gap, too. I didn't get rung up for a pair of pants ( that I've yer to wear). Anyway, I called as soon as I got home and asked if I could pay over the phone, the manager asked me to call back around around 9. That was like 12 hrs later, I forgot and saw it as a Xmas gift from a store I spend too much on. You should at least try to correct it.
  • I was at target a few weeks ago and had 3 separate orders... By the time the cashier got to the 3rd one his register crashed then he rebooted his system. I heard the toy ring in along with the several other small items and proceeded to cash out as normal, not paying attention to the amount he told me (we were talking) and when i got home and checked my reciept I realized he never charged me for the toy. I wasn't going back for his registers mistake.

I can't believe this.  You call stating that you were rung up incorrectly, trying to correct it and they won't take your money then?  You have to call back, that's insane (and no, I'm not being sarcastic).

I'm a very honest person.  I felt bad because a small dipping bowl from Chili's made it into my stroller and I didn't realize it until I had all 3 boys buckled up in their car seats, it was about a 10-15 minute ordeal to get the stroller unloaded and the boys in the car so I just threw the bowl in the trunk with the stroller.

I work at Gap, and typically it's against store policy to have a customer pay for an item over the phone unless it's a store-to-store call. So, it's possible that the manager on duty had to check with the GM to get clearance to ring it through, or the store just could have been too busy during open hours, which is why (s)he wanted you to call back at 9 P.M. when the store closed.

However...I don't really buy that you "forgot" it. Maybe that day, but I promise you eventually remembered at some point over the next week, when you still could have easily called and paid for it. "Trying" to correct it doesn't make it right - correcting it does.

But, if it makes you feel any better...I can assure you that one pair of pants didn't destroy the Gap's daily sales.

  • DH and I had that happen to us buying a pair of sneakers for myself and our little one. Instead of ringing up mine, he was talking and rang up our son's infant sneakers twice.
