Is this enough food?

We are having about 40 adults and 15 kids at our house for my son's 1st birthday, and I'm not sure how much food I need.  I've never planned a party this big, so I'd love your input!  This is what I'm thinking:

Appetizer platter (110 pieces)

Cheese/fruit platter - feeds 35-40

Veggie platter - feeds 15-20

Bruchetta Bar - feeds 35-40

Salad - feeds 35-40

Pasta Salad - feeds 35-40

Dollar Roll Sandwiches - 28

Party Sub Sandwich - feeds 35-40

This would all be catered, plus I will be making a roaster full of mostaccioli and spinach artichoke dip/chips.  Do you think this is enough/too much?  Am I leaving anything out?

TIA!!

Re: Is this enough food?

  • I think you'll be surprised and will probably have food leftover.  I've been feeding large groups about that size all football season long (and yes, it's been an ordeal - thank heavens football's over!) and I'm amazed at how much people actually don't eat.  Last year I had a big party at my house for 40 men and 20 women (so I was planning on lots of eaters) and I had food left for weeks

I wouldn't get two types of sandwiches.  Get either the dollar roll or the party sub.  Esp since you're making pasta, there's definitely no need to go overboard on the sandwiches.  Lots of people will choose homemade pasta over a deli sandwich.

You have 110 apps in addition to all that?  What exactly is on that app plate?  With a meal that large, there is no way you need 3 apps per person, which is probably the planning number you're working with.

Scale back on the salad; many people won't get it when given other, fun choices ;)

Bruschetta sounds fun and popular, so I'd leave it just the way it is. The kids will all probably go for the cheese & fruit plate, so I'd probably leave that alone, too.

You don't need pasta salad for 35-40, probably half that.  Half your crowd, maybe more, won't touch it.

Spinach & artichoke sounds great, but it depends on what's on the app plate.

This is great feedback - you sound like an expert!  The appetizer platter is actually all toasted ravioli...I believe this is a St. Louis thing so I wasn't sure if the board would know what it is.

I've seen it in chain restaurants on the app menu, so I guess it's traveled ;)

My gut is to tell you no on the toasted ravioli.  You already have 2 pasta dishes.  But if it's really popular in the area and people love it, then keep it.  Definitely dial back on the qty - maybe 70-80 pieces.  Do keep your qty for spinach & artichoke high.

  • It sounds wonderful and like you have plenty!  Have fun hosting!
