How to find a good couple's therapist?
My H and I got married in July, and there are no major issues with the
relationship, except that we've been having a lot of issues with
careers and stress for a while and as a result, a lot of "newlywed"
planning or discussions have just been avoided. I've been thinking that
talking with a couple's therapist would be helpful to strengthen an
already good relationship, because there's still room for improvement.
H has been suffering from depression due to some medications, and with
the stress of our jobs or lack thereof, we've just had a hard time
discussing things. H is open to the idea as well. I've had a hard time
finding recommendations for a therapist or resources that would help in
the search. I've looked online, but most results are websites that look
a bit unprofessional to me, or for groups of counselors mainly focused
on other types of problems. I'm in the Boston area, so any tips for
searching would be very helpful.
Re: How to find a good couple's therapist?
I think it's great that you are recognizing issues and willing to work on them. I don't have any specific recommendations for therapists, but I suggest contacting your insurance company to see if they can guide you to someone in your network who specializes in the type of counseling you want/need. It sounds like at least one of you is unemployed, but I know that some larger companies have employee assistance programs that you can contact to get referred for a few counseling sessions free of charge. Good luck!
I completely agree with bostonbaker as well as calling Therapy Matcher (run thru NASW I think) 800-242-9794-- they will give you some referrals to people who will meet your needs/ take your insurance.
Good luck!
I think it's fantastic that you're working through things preemptively. As part of our pre-marital planning, we had some couple's therapy for the same reasons and it was so great. We used Rev. Robin Zucker (right in Cambridge). She's so fantastic. I can't recommend her enough. http://www.flowingforce.com/tune_up.htm
Good luck!

My H and I saw a counselor for about the same reasons, we just needed a little help communicating. We've seen two--the first lady was older (think grandmotherly) and I felt she was a little out of touch with the issues of today's young couples. The second lady is closer to our age and we really learned a lot from her.
I just went to http://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/county/MA/Middlesex.html and looked through profiles to find someone who matched what we needed. I wanted someone who specialized in couples, young adults, life stage/transition issues, and life coaching. Hope things work out for you.
