Hello from Pgh - and a ?

Hello NC Nesties!

I was writing because I hear that your neck of the woods is "famous" for their inexpensive but good quality furniture.  I was wondering if all of these furniture outlets are in one place, or are they spread out?  Are there any you recommend?

Finally, is there a better time than others to make our way down to check it out, like do they run President's day specials and such?  We thought about perhaps making a romantic weekend out of coming down and doing some shopping and would gladly time our trip with any sales if we can swing it.

Thanks so much for any information you can provide!  DH and I are building a home and will definitely be needing some new furniture, and if we can come there to save some $, we definitely will!

Thanks again!

Re: Hello from Pgh - and a ?

  • High Point is where they have furniture market.  There's a lot of stores there.  I don't really know if one time of year is better than another, and they just had furniture market not too long ago.
  • Here in High Point we have a lot of the Furniture Corporate companies.  There are several retail outlets that sell the furniture at deeper discounts than what most people can find elsewhere, like Furnitureland South and Boyles, but I prefer a smaller shop in Greensboro called Priba.

But really, the place to go these days would be Hickory.  Most of the furniture that's still being made in the US is made in and around the Hickory, NC area.  There's a HUGE place, Hickory Furniture Mart that carries most of the furniture brands and will have some of the better prices on the overstocks/prototypes of the local factories.  But GOOD furniture still isn't going to be cheap (or anywhere near Ikea prices).  It'd probably only be worth a trip if you do some legwork up front, know what brands you want and have some idea of the pieces you are looking to buy--a sofa, dining room table, etc etc--and more importantly that you want US-made or assembled pieces.  Because frankly, most of the imported stuff wouldn't be any less expensive down here than it would be anywhere else.

The only time I would strong DIScourage you from a trip to the area would be during the two furniture markets--in April (first week next year) and mid October.  But right after market is a good time to buy floor samples or prototypes of items that might not make it to the showroom floors.  HTHs!

  • Thank you!

  • We just found a sectional sofa at Hickory Furniture Mart.  We had great luck there.  There is a Mitchell Gold & Bob Williams outlet that had amazing prices, and their style is a little more modern.  We got our sofa from Vanguard Furniture - still made right in NC.  Hickory Furniture Mart has a website so you can check out the stores.  There are also other outlets in town that aren't at the mart, I haven't been to them though.
  • PS - Having said that, Hickory isn't somewhere I'd normally consider for a romantic weekend though.  It's only about an hour from Charlotte, so I'd stay there and just day trip up to Hickory.
