Where to go on our next trip?

We are looking into our next vacation and I don't know where to go. We have mention Japan, Baltic Cruise, Alaskan Cruise, Jamaica, Belize, Dominican Republic, Argentina, St. Lucia, Costa Rica and Bahamas...it sounds like we have travel ADD, right?...anyway...after more discussion we decided we want somewhere that doesn't involve a super long plane ride and somewhere warm...so I guess we narrowed it down to the Caribbean.

Now I need some suggestions. Please tell me what are the places you love and why.

TIA!

Re: Where to go on our next trip?

  • Jamaica!  We're going next year with a group who came to our wedding.  Think you should come with!
  • Also, lots of those place sound amazing but if you're set on the carribean, I'm personally not crazy about the Bahamas or the Dominican Republic.  Really can't explain why I don't like the Bahamas but it's just not one of my favorite destinations.  Ive been 3 times and probably wouldn't return.

We went to DR on our cruise so keep in mind my opinion is based on a few hours there.  It was beautiful.  Probably the prettiest place I've ever seen but it was bad.  Scary bad.  Friends of ours booked a Jeep 4-wheeling thing, through the cruise, and had people with machetes jumping on their trucks.  We went on a tour and I enjoyed it but having young boys walk you into the woods was probably not the smartest thing.  My parents went a few years ago and loved it.  I think they didn't really leave the resort though.  So if you just want a beach, I'm sure it's fine.  If you want to leave the resort, you might want to pick another destination.

  • DH and I are hoping to hit Aruba next year.  My parent's rave about it.
  • Would you guys consider Europe again? My goal is to go to as many countries there ;) I can't remember where all you have been but Portugal, Italy & Germany are my favorites so far. We're thinking Greece or Fiji for our next one. Have fun picking a place!

I've been to DR a few times and I know how it goes, so you we will probably won't be leaving the resort...although people have never really mees up with me there, maybe bacuse I look like one of the locals and speak their "lingo" too.

And yes, Jamaica is on the top of our list now that you guys will be there.

I've been to aruba a few times too and I love it...my only problem with it is thet I think is too far of a flight...either way if you go you are gonna love it...people are super nice and the beaches are awesome!

Italy we went already and Germany and Portugal were on the list too, but we wanted to take a break from Europe 'cause the flights are killer and for next trip we wanted to chill on a beach rather than sightsee. Now I would like the info on that place you stayed in Portugal 'cause it looked awesome.

ETA: The Greek Isles are beautiful! I didn't like Athens, but the Greek Isles rock!

  • Come hang out with me in Jamaica in December!  Or Aruba in May!  :)

Although, to be honest, if I were you I would go for Belize.  There's a resort called Jaguar Reef that I've looked into for a wedding (hey, leave me alone, a girl can dream... again... Stick out tongue).  It's beautiful and the reviews say it has some of the best snorkeling and diving anywhere!

  • Since you want to go warm with beaches I vote for Jamaica. It's someplace I've always wanted to go, but DH & I aren't really "lay on the beach all day" types, which is what stopped us from going for our vacation next year (we chose the cruise instead, also for $ reasons). It seems like a lot of people I know who love Jamaica love it because they never have to leave the resort and can drink & lay around all day (which is awesome!) but I know how we are and we would be bored with that in 1 day.
  • I love St Thomas because I'm obsessed with the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jos Van Word-the-Nest-Won't-Let-Me-Type. And I love(!!) St Barts because it reminds me of the south of France... without the plane ride. Anguilla is beautiful if you just want to sit and relax, or the new Gansevoort Hotel in Turks & Caicos (aka TurkeyCakes) is heavenly.
I'm in the minority, but I don't love the Bahamas or Jamaica even though I've stayed at really nice hotels in both places.
    From Oy Vey to Ole!

St. Barts was also on my list, but I know nothing about it...I'll have to pick your brain on Saturday to get some more info.  I'll have to look into Angulla also, cause again, I know nothing about it.

T&C was vetoed by DH for some stupid reason I still don't quite understand.

And the Soggy Dollar Bar freaking rocks! Best painkillers in the whole VI's! But since I was a little my parents went to the VI's every year 'cause it's super close to PR and they could go on the boat, so I'm trying to stay away from there and go somewhere new.

Well then I guess I'll save Belize to attend that wedding...we can dream too right? Wink

  • I swear I'm the only person in the world who absolutely HATED Belize!  I would never go back.

Is Aruba a long flight?  I didn't really look into it.  We wanted to go to Hawaii but with the 2k plane tickets we opted not to go haha.  It wouldn't cost us anymore to fly to Aruba than it would to Vegas , but I didn't check time.  I'll do that now ;)

  • Belize and Curacao are my two favorite places that are warm that I've been.  Both are beautiful, the peopel are amazaing and the culture is great (and this is all "off" resort type of vacation).

My list... Galapagos or the greek isles.

  • The newest must-go-to-one-day that tops my list is now Barbados.

In my winter hibernation, I've been watching many travel shows and I come to love this place that I've never been to. I have also learned that it's a bit a pricey...so this one goes on the back burner for us for a while.

But there's so much to see and do and it seems to be safe, friendly, & just down right beautiful...ahhhh, I can hear the surf now (along with the sounds of the steel drums)!

  • I think any and all of the places mentioned in this thread sound wonderful!  Can we have a Nestie GTG in the Caribbean, please?

When are you planning to go on the trip?
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • We just got back from Jamaica and I looooved it! There are lots of resorts with really pretty beaches if you are more of a stay on the resort and drink person (which I am). It was one of my top two trips.
  • We stopped in Dominica on our honeymoon cruise and out of all the stops this was our favorite, but I don't think there are any resorts there. Of the other stops we made the only place I'd like to go back to is St. Lucia. I really want to say I've been inside a volcano, but there weren't any excursions going there with the cruise line.

We are not sit on the beach and drink all day kind of people. DH has ADD and I need to feel like we got our money's worth so if I'm going to spend money I want to actually see stuff, hence our trip in the ticker below. DH doesn't know this but I've decided I get to pick our next destination and I've already decided on the United Kingdom.
