Holiday Get Together

Last year, we went to a friend's house on a Sunday afternoon for a holiday get together.  She told us in advance that it would be apps, dessert, and wine.  We brought an appetizer and a dessert with us.  When we got there, there were three apps and 2 desserts incluing what we brought with us.  Yes, this was low key and she told us it would be.

However, this year is my turn to host.  I normally offer more selections.  My questions is I will do a few appetizers.  I wanted to offer ham, potatoes etc in addition.  Would you offer apps first and then the meal?  or Would you follow more of her lead from last year?

I know this seems silly, but I don't want people to leave hungry like we did last year because we were there around dinner time.  TIA

Re: Holiday Get Together

  • I say if it is your turn to host, you do it ahowever you feel comfortable. I host a Christmas party every year, and it is in the evening, and I am like you. I always have way too much food, but I don't want anyone to leave hungry. Plus, some people bring stuff. As a hostess, I understand how you feel, and I say that since the gathering reflects on you, you host it however you want to. I serve appetizers first, and then an hour later I serve dinner (buffet style since it is 30-plus guests at my party).

Ditto! Do it how you want since it will reflect on you! I personally would do a few apps and then dinner

  • Low key does not have to equal low food.  (It actually just sounds like her effort was low key Huh?)

I wouldn't consider last year's party at all when planning your menu.  Do what you want and what you think your guests will appreciate and enjoy.
