What to get his mother?

Well, and father. But especially his mother.

For the past two years, my BF and I have gone our separate ways on Christmas. This year, we are spending it together, which is wonderful... but now poses one big, fat problem: I have no idea what to get his parents.

I'm hoping to get his parents a combined gift (I am finishing up school and on a very tight budget). Oh, and my go-to-bottle of wine gift won't work, as she despises alcohol and anyone who touches it.

I am willing to take a stab at homemade gift ideas, but please remember that I have to fly with this stuff, so nothing too fragile.

 Help please. :)

  • What about a gift certificate to their favorite restaurant? Or a nice set of holiday coffee mugs? (they can use it for tea or hot chocolate if they don't drink coffee) You could also go for a gift basket of fruit or chocolate from a place like harry and davids or godiva.

  • My new absolute FAVE site is kodakgallery.com.  Pretty affordable and thoughtful (in my opinion).  Kinda on the corny side but maybe they're into that? I did a hard cover album for the in-laws this year, cost about $40 but you can do them for cheaper, and calendars too.  It's like doing an online scrapbook where you can pick the backgrounds and add captions if you want.  Had a blast doing it, the theme for us was "we live in CA and you live in MI; here's what you missed in the last year...." Takes about 2 weeks to ship. Just my 2 cents :) good luck!
  • Does she drink tea? They have some really pretty tea gift sets. Or just some specialty teas... not expensive but maybe more than she would spend on herself for tea..... Maybe one of those and some homemade holiday cookies (tucked in your carry-on?)

  • Thanks for the ideas ladies! Both of his parents are tea and coffee drinkers, so I'm thinking of making a gift basket with some nice teas or coffees, and maybe throw in some other treats! Thanks!
  • You could get a nice picture frame, possibly one with the two places for pictures you could give them one of the two of you and then one of just their son.  Or if you can get your hands on an old picture of them and a new picture of them that would work too.  Or if you sew you can steal my mom's idea , she made my Aunt and Uncle a set of throw pillows, on one side of the pillows was a cute patterned fabric and on the other side was an iron on copy of one of their wedding photos, and on the other pillow was a picture from one of their anniversary parties.
