blogging question.

What is a blog supposed to be? I can't quite figure it out, but I want one. Someone please help me. Thanks!

Re: blogging question.

  • I see it as an online journal, what you are doing, hobbies, photos, etc. I have one and love it, I"m pretty sure the only person that reads it is my Mom  :)

  • It's really up to you.

For some people it's an online journal.  A lot of people keep one so that their friends and family can know what's going on and stay updated.  This is especially popular for people who live far away or those who have kids and want their families to stay up-to-date.

For others, it's more like a little self-published magazine, where you write brief (or not-so-brief) articles about a subject that you're interested in or that you know a lot about and want to share.  (i.e. I have friends with cooking blogs, photography blogs, fashion blogs, etc.)  Similarly, some people keep one as their own editorial forum to publish and share their opinions and viewpoints on different subjects.

My own blog pre-dates Facebook, so originally it was a forum for me to share links, articles, experiences, photos, etc. with my family and my friends from my hometown after I left for college and later when I moved out of state.  Facebook has replaced a lot of that, so now I tend to write three kinds of posts:  Major news about what we're up to (moves, vacations, our apartment purchase, etc.), stories about life as an ex-pat that I think people might be interested in (these are mostly things I'd just have to re-tell over and over anyway), and information that I think people might find useful if they're searching the web for it (mostly travel info that I couldn't find myself before the trip).  Sometimes I also post things that are just too long for the Facebook format (i.e. if I have a few paragraphs to write about something I want to share).

  • Some people use it as a journal or web log, others build a business out of a blog. They usually focus on a specific topic.
