Backup camera in vehicles
All vehicles are required by 2014 to have backup cameras installed on them.
I have one in my car and I LOVE it!
Apparently there are over 400 PEOPLE hit a day and of those 400, 2 die.
I've never hit anyone while backing up, but the camera sure has helped me to NOT hit something.
Do you have a camera in your vehicle?
Re: Backup camera in vehicles
We do not currently, but my lease is up in a year and all the SUVs we are looking at seem to have them standard. I thought it was kind a interesting since when we got DH's car it was optional, I wondered why it was standard in so many that we researched. Now I know why!
I think it is a great thing. Especially this time of year when parking lots are a mad house. I have a few blind spots in my Jeep and a back up camera would have helped a ton. Not so much to prevent me from hitting a person, but in tight quarters, from backing up into another car. Sometimes it is really hard to judge distance. You know??
Not to mention I hit the bush at the end of our driveway nearly every single day!! ha!
This makes me think the machines are taking over...
No I don't have one. I umm look out the back of my car and use my mirrors.
So is that 400 that are hit (as in hit by a car) or is it 400 hit during a backup?
I know they are good to have I've covered stories about a little kids who got ran over because someone didn't see him but I wonder if having the backup cam would've helped. I think the same thing when i see those "I didn't see the car stop but my Mercedes did".
LT, the TODAY show covered the story on Friday.
It talked about how one grandfather checked all his mirrors, but didn't see his 16 month old standing right behind the SUV. He backed over him and killed him. It also talked about how a typical sedan has I think a 8' blind spot and the bigger the vehicle the bigger the blind spot. B's old truck had a 30' blind spot.
They guy doing the story had 3 toddlers standing right behind his car and you could not see them in any of the mirrors, but as soon as he put the car in reverse you could see all three kids in the camera.
I know in my car, the camera is up on the mirror. It has 3 lines, a green, which is 3 feet away, a yellow, which is 2 feet away and red, which means you have either hit it or about to. And with each line the car peeps faster and louder.
Our vehicles don't have them, and I don't think I've ever driven a car that has had one. But if it saves lives, I think they're great!
I don't have one, but my moms van does and I have to drive her around a lot since her surgeries. I can't stand hers...drives me nuts. I don't think its very accurate, by the time it appears you're going to hit something...you've probably already hit it! Maybe it just needs to be adjusted...but I hate it.
Now I used to take my dads motorhome when DH and I went on trips a few times a year. I LOVED the camera when it came to backing up a 36' motorhome into a camp site.
I have it in the van in the rv mirror. It doesn't have lines or beeps. I am still trying to get used to it (DH hates it). I check mirror and turn and look when in a parking lot because other cars and people don't care and will keep coming/walk behind you even as you are in the motion of backing up, so I do like the camera in that situation.
I can tell you before my camera, if DH was outside holding A, I would see them and make eye contact with DH before I would even think about backing up. I don't understand why people can't use common sense and take the extra step to know where your loved ones are before you back out or even drive out (forward) for that matter. I will continue to know where they are w or w/o a camera.
