Affluence

There was an interesting article on Morning Edition this morning about affluent African Americans, triple As.  Anyway, this post isn't about that, it's about something they brought up during the interview, and that is: what is affluent.

Marketers, according to the article, mark individuals who earn $75k and couples who earn $150k are marked as affluent regardless of their location (HCOL, LCOL, etc) because they are earning much more than the typical American.

Based this and on last week's discussion of envious money goals, I wanted to throw out an anonymous poll to see where we are as a group on the scale of affluence.  We will not be looking at individual pay since everyone on this board (as far as I know) is married.  If you have children, please still participate. Smile

As the poll author, I will wait a while before making my selection in order maintain my anonymity as well.[Poll]

Re: Affluence

  • Just want to point out that cost of living in a given region makes a huge difference.  If DH and I were making our same salary in Milwaukee, we'd be money (ha... pun intended).  11% sales tax hurts.

IRL, yes, it does.  However, we're looking at this from the marketing standpoint that was presented in the article--so, in this case, it doesn't.

  • I voted, but you can delete my answer if you like.  I have 30 years on everyone else!
My baby girl is a married woman...and now my baby girl HAS a baby girl. Time unfolds in such an amazing way. I've been blessed!

  • With my new job plus DHs, we are definitely "affluent". I hope it starts to feel that way soon! Cost of living is ridiculous here, though not quite as bad an NYC.
