UGH debt

I'm getting aggravated with all of these stupid bills. Its not that our debt (aside from having the mortgage) has gone up lately...its just that its harder around the holidays to keep a good chunk in the bank to pay the bills. I hate not having money. I can't wait to someday say that we have no debt (aside from the mortgage which is going to take FOREVER to pay off lol).

The end.

Re: UGH debt

  • I hear you. Doesn't help that my husbands unemployment ended last week. Plus on top of the holidays, my daughters birthday is the day after Christmas, and my oldest son turns 16 two weeks later.

They're both already talking parties, presents, a car (hahahahaha) and all I'm doing is racking up in my head how much this is all going to cost.

I start my new job in January which will be a huge help..but if they hold 2 weeks pay, as most places do, it'll be at least February before it'll really start making a difference for us. :(

  • I am totally with you on this. We only have school debt, but we're also trying to save for a down payment on a house when we move in a year or so. All that = no money to spend.
  • Totally hear you!  Between the two of us, DH and I have four masters' degrees (HELLO, student loan debt!) and between that and saving for a house it seems like there's never anything left over.  Sigh.

  • well, im sorry im not alone in the whole crappy debt pile. only thing i can suggest for you ladies who DON'T yet own houses, pay off as much as humanly possible before you get the house. because houses are money sucking pits and anything extra you have will go into the house, not other stuff you need to pay off. blegh.

  • Same for us. I think it's like this for everyone around this time of year. We've been doing really good at getting our debts down/paid off...only a few things left to go (minus car and student loans) and we really want to keep savings for a house. The holidays always screw with your plans and freak you out.

The thing I always have to tell myself around this time is that it's only one month out of the year. We can get through one month.

  • Story of life. DH and I were talking one night about it always seems like you can't get ahead.

We both have student loans. DH has car payments (which luckily will be done in the next year). About the time it gets paid off, I'll need a new one. (Mine is starting to nickle and dime us.) We want a house, and have been saving, but it's so hard! And a few months before the wedding, DH had to get some dental work done. (He knocked his 2 front teeth out playing basketball in jr. high....the fake ones fell out in April.) Of course insurance doesn't cover all of that either.

I envy people like my parents. They own their home (no more mortgage), both their vehicles are new-ish and paid off. They have basically no debt other than monthly utilities. All their kids are grown, so they have money now to spend on themselves. I want to be like that.....

  • Sorry you're feeling that way :(  But, yep, same story here. As excited as I was about my new car, it means that we both have car payments now. Plus, besides all the normal monthly rent things I board my horse and he is still paying for tuition.  We don't have a legitimate savings for a house yet, which really sucks :(  Sometimes I wonder how we are supposed to save for buying when we are always paying for renting... I still haven't bought snow tires, and it's snowed 5 days in a row and now again today. And DH broke the turbo on his car the other day... Now I kind of want to cry :(

  • I totally understand.  Right now DH is the only one working and his salary is not that much.  Then, he'll have to quit right after I get my masters degree so he can go to dental school.  We're just hoping and praying I get a job th Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0in; mso-para-margin-right:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:12.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0in; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";} at'll make us a bit more money so we can actually have some fun every once in awhile instead of pinching pennies just to get by.  It's hard to really save for a house when all your money goes into paying rent, just like vmiller_21 said.

  • I totally agree, and I feel like its especially worse with the holidays too! DH and I were just talking today about how much money we will have left for Christmas stuff after paying bills and it isn't very much at all. He still has to get a xmas present for his mom and my xmas present which I feel bad about.  I ordered his a while back when we had a little more money to do so and we really don't have enough for him to get me something but I know he will want to since I got him something...maybe I can convince him to skip it and just let me save the gift and give it to him in March for his bday?

We have all of his student loans to pay back too, luckily (or unluckily) we don't have to start paying them back until he is out of school and he plans on continuing on to his doctorate after he finishes his masters next year. I still want to try to start making payments on them before we have to start paying them once we get a little extra money but it never seems like we have any extra at the end of each month :/   He said his student loan payments will be something like a couple hundred a month...*sigh* it makes me sick thinking about it! I'm so grateful that my grandpa and parents helped me pay for college so that I didn't have student loans to add to DH's

I really hope that I get more hours at work next month so I can start making a little more :/  I only get 2 days a week at my job now which sucks, but I'm still grateful that I have a job at all! They've been talking about switching me to 3 days a week in Jan so thats good...4 days a week there is full time b/c its 10 hour days so it'll make a little difference at least. DH only gets his check once a month from the school for being a teaching assistant which is good but it really makes it difficult to stretch that through the whole month :/

     Grrr I hate money!

  • Ditto everything that has already been said. It seems like each time it looks like we are going to pull ahead, something else comes up.
