Will my bulbs die?

Hi Ladies,

About a month ago, I asked your opinion on when I should plant my spring bulbs.  I planted them when you recommended and there must have been a few warmer days in the past month, because some of them sprung out.

Will they not bloom in Spring now? Will they die when the frost comes in (it's below 30degrees now)??? What can I do to stop them from coming out more, if more warm days come in?

I live in Hudson River area of NY.

Thank you!!!!

Re: Will my bulbs die?

  • They'll be fine. I regularly have some sprouting of bulbs during warm fall days. They do just fine in the spring.

    GL! And stay warm!

  • Thank you.  A colleague in the office said that I should cover them so they cannot see the sun, which should stop them from growing more... would that do anything? I am not sure if she has experience with this kind of stuff.
  • I've never covered them, but I'm the laziest gardener on the planet. They still turned out fine in the spring.

  • many bulbs *need* a freeze to bloom properly.  thus, freezing temperatures, provided they aren't actually blooming *now*, isn't a big deal.  Growing leaves/stems isn't nearly as taxing to a plant as flowering, so I agree with pp: it's fine to do nothing.
  • Good to know. I planted bulbs for the first time and I'm pretty sure all my little daffodils have sprung up. We had a few warm days but the cold nights should stunt them a bit. I haven't done anything to stop them from growing so I'm glad I apparently did the right thing!
