Oh my goodness.
My parents filled our basement with canned goods and other nonperishables, got milk goats and egg-laying chickens, and put a wood stove in the living room for heat. Totally serious.
BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
The canned goods and wood stove were sort of just smart winter preparations, considering how inaccessible our house could be if there was a lot of snow for a couple of weeks. They kept the stove for several years, and they still maintain a pantry of nonperishable foods in the basement year-round because it turned out to be so convenient. It cuts down on grocery trips, which is a good thing when it's 35 minutes to the nearest grocery store.
For a while there, we had three horses, two goats, four chickens, a dog, a cat, two hermit crabs, and a quail. I loved it.
But, yeah, my parents are a little nuts sometimes.
