Update on DH

We saw the nurse pracitioner today and talked with her about what happend....she seems to feel the same way I felt about DHs Hypoglycemia. Without knowing anything for certain the best guess is that his blood sugar dipped severely low, he had a siezure but his pancreas dumped out as much glucose as it could in a trauma situation causing a rebound in his blood sugar and helping him to come out of the low. Its not uncommon, but not the norm.

They are going to strictly monitor his blood sugar, he has discontinued using his short acting insulin unless he is very high (like over 300) and dropped his long acting insulin about 8 units from where it was. Dropping the insulin should help balance out his numbers, as he is not showing any patterns of lows or highs.

He is to keep a strict log of his sugars as well as do a few 3 AM blood sugars, we are to keep an injectible near the bedside at all times (really effing expensive and not covered by insurance...not to mention that heaven forbid we have to use it, I would be the one injecting him). They are going to hold of on doing any CTs or  anything of that nature until he is reassessed in a month by his endocrinologist.

As far as his tongue, which he bit really badly, Warm salt water rinses, and something called Magic Mouthwash three times daily to help with the pain and keep the tongue from getting infected.

Re: Update on DH

  • While it sounds like a PITA, I do hope that all of these changes and monitoring help, and that everything gets back under control!    And don't be nervous about the injectable, you've already proven that you can handle difficult situations very well!  :)  Boooo to it being pricey and not covered though. :(
