No food !!!!!

hey i am trying to plan a 30th birthday party. i am not really the hosting kind and just thought of have just appetizers, desert and drinks no main dish. how would you feel if you were invited?

Re: No food !!!!!

  • I'm going to need more information than that.  What time are you thinking?  What kind and how many appetizers/desserts?

  • its going to be in the evening 5ish and i don't have a menu yet i was just thinking what would be easier to have just appetizers/dessert or/and a main dish
  • If I was invited to a 5:00 party, I would expect heavy hors d'oeuvres, if not a full meal.  It's close to dinner time for most people.

Logistically though, you're going to have problems planning a full meal for a ton of people unless you have ample seating and do something along the lines of a cookout.

  • Your concept is fine, just not the time.  5 pm is essentially dinnertime and you'd need to serve serious food.  Make it earlier or later to serve light nibbles.
  • A 5 pm happy hour with heavy apps would be okay.  Note I said happy hour, don't expect people to stay past 7.  If you want a bigger party to go later, but still serve heavy apps, start at 8.

I do think you can have a dinner without having a table for everyone, but you will need a seat and you will need food that is friendly for it.

This 100%.  Apps at 5 and expecting people to stay is unrealistic.  Birthday parties are no different than weddings when it comes to providing for guests and budget.  You have time, provisions, number of guests and money.  You have to compromise on at least one of those things and it shouldn't be provisions for guests.

  • I think apps are fine for a 5pm party, however, as another poster suggested they need to be heavy apps.

My Christmas party last year was all apps and people were definitely full.  Just make sure you have a big variety.

I would also recommend looking into local places which can provide the food for you (so you don't have to do all the cooking and prep....doesn't have to be formal catering).

  • thanks guys, i'll have to add a main dish then and hopefully it will be catered so less stress
  • Hi! Here are some ideas for FOOD...If you don't cook... and want to keep it casual:

    1. Order really good (Sicillian or Chicago Deep Dish) Pizza and have them cut it in small squares for you and serve with a salad or antipasti.

    2. Order some 3' or 6' Hero Sandwiches and have them pre-slice it for you.

    3. Go to Olive Garden and buy directly some pans of their Lasagna (really good) to heat up in the oven.

     4. Order several dishes from a Chineese Restaurant and serve them with lots of chop sticks and take-out containers.  Sauces etc.

    5. Order Indian food and keep that warm in the oven with Naan Bread.

You get where I'm going here... serve people food. They need to eat and will think of you kindly.  You don't have to cook everything yourself.

Good Luck and please let us know how it goes. :)
