Can someone explain unlocking cell phones?

I'm looking at possibly unlocking a windows 7 phone for use on Verizon.  Right now we don't have a data plan on our plan, but could add that, but I was wondering if it's possible and how I figure all this out.

Links and advice are helpful.

Re: Can someone explain unlocking cell phones?

  • Verizon and AT&T use different cellular technologies, so you won't be able to use a WP7 phone on Verizon until they release a WP7 phone that is compatible (which should be in the next couple of months anyway). This is the same reason why you can't use an iPhone on Verizon.
  • Actually I know people who have "unlocked" the iphone and use it with Verizon. As to how they do it..I have no idea.

It's possible they use it with wifi for calling (VOIP) and data, but it is impossible to use for cellular voice and data. I guess that works for them if they're constantly connected to wifi.

  • Basically anything without a SIM card you cant use. So you could unlock a Sprint or Cricket phone (I don't know what else is in your area). But all the AT&T and T-Mobile phones you wont.
