This is the second year of me doing a party and don't know how much alcohol people drink? I just graduated two years ago and my friends are still drinkers.
I'm having holiday party this weekend and I don't know what to buy for drinks. I am expecting about 40 people and am serving desserts. I am unable to have a keg (because of apartment rules) so I was thinking about serving wine and hard liquor.
Last year I bought a case of wine and had a couple of handles but people brought their own drinks. This year I am providing all of the drinks. I have bought 6 two liters of pop, a huge things of hot chocolate, and I will probably buy a case of wine. I would also like to serve hard liquor but dont know how many handles I should buy? How many different types of alcohol do you think that I need? Do you think I should have beer also? I am on a budget but I don't want people to be thirsty.
Any other suggestions on drinks I need?
Re: How much alcohol to serve at a party?
If all of your friends are all big drinkers and you're having 40 people over you're going to spend a lot of money on alcohol! We always provide some and then tell people to bring their favorite bottle of wine or six pack. It saves a lot of money.
Otherwise, you may want to get a keg, a bottle of each of the big kinds of liquor you know your friends drink (like vodka, whiskey, etc.), and a case of wine. The beer will probably get used up, and the other stuff even if it's not used up you can save for the next party.

I think you'd be fine with a handle of vodka and rum - i find that those are the two liquors that most people make mixed drinks with on their own. You could get a whiskey/gin but I don't think they are staples. A case of wine would be good. Can you have mini kegs at your apartment? If so that might be a good idea, otherwise I would get a couple 24 packs of beer.
plan on 5 drinks per person. have some non alch cider or egg nog on hand too. its festive.
