hi all. my husband would like a portable gps for christmas. i know nothing about these. he doesn't need anything particularly fancy, just needs to get him from here to there. are lifetime maps and traffic worth the extra $? how much do the map updates cost if you don't have lifetime?
any recs? would love to keep it as close to $100 as possible...
thanks!
Re: portable gps
This won't be entirely helpful, but DH got a Garmin Nuvi (but I'm not sure on model number) from his parents 2 years ago and we still use/love it. We have the map/live traffic features and it comes in handy when we're trying to get out of the city.
However, I think we'rve only updated the maps once. I believe DH took it into the Garmin store.
I'd recommend Garmin!

I have a Garmin Nuvi, I bought it several years ago and haven't yet updated the aps... I prob should but I haven't ran into too many problems.
If you go on Amazon you can find TONS of past models of different Garmins. I honestly only needed that actual GPS feature, it to tell me when to turn, the next command to be written at the top of the screen. I love the "Go Home" function, I set it to a place near my home for security. But at least on Amazon, you can get a pretty decent GPS for really great prices.
