What are the CN kids getting this year?
Re: What are the CN kids getting this year?
Gwen is getting a babe-sized chair, one she can climb onto herself... and more importantly one she can dive off of face first, the way she likes to, without giving me a freakin heart attack each time.
She's also getting a wooden drum and xylophone, some oversized lego type blocks, and some books.
My parents got her a handmade wooden rocking horse. I'm sure MIL got her dozens of outfits.
We already bought some of her birthday stuff too, since there was a big Melissa and Doug sale the other day.

Dude get him a balance bike! It's the second best thing we've ever gotten Matt (best thing is the kitchen tower). It's been so good for his tummy and back strength and balance - and I'm pretty sure he will be riding a regular two-wheel bike by roughly his third birthday. We have the Specialized one!
Confession: I bought three of the retro FP toys. I couldn't resist!
Noisy our neighborhood has a balance bike that they pass around to all the two year olds. By 3 most of the kids are on a regular little bike without training wheels, they are awesome. One of the older boys (4?) who was having a lot of trouble getting rid of his training wheels, so even though he had to ride the "little boy bike" the switch to the balance bike got him training wheel free in just a couple weeks.

Wendy it is a big boy bike! It just doesn't have pedals.
Noisy, I think balance bikes are just starting to catch on here - a friend of mine is getting ready to move her family to Germany and she said they are everywhere over there.
I personally think it's the optimal way for a kid to learn to ride a bike. Steering and balance are the hardest parts of riding a bike, this forces them to master that before adding in pedals. Plus it's helped Matt's balance skills in general.
Honestly, I would keep Matt on the balance bike indefinitely (until it clearly didn't fit him anymore) except that he has gotten so good that he goes REALLY fast. Kid needs some damn breaks so I don't have to start popping Xanax just to watch him ride his bike.
...and now I want to get Andy a balance bike.
