We are not able to go to our bowl game this year.
A. I can't take the time off from work. So many people have the week after Christmas off.
B. We can't afford the travel, lodging, etc. involved in going to the game. It was $500/person for flights alone.
We found an option through the Mizzou athletic department to donate tickets. Basically you buy the tickets and they are given to either military people or the boys and girls club.
We figure if we cannot go - we might as well make it so someone else can. I think we will donate 2 tickets.
I was just passing this along in case other universities offer this. It's definitely something to look into if you have a little extra money.
Re: Donating bowl tickets....
That's wonderful of you to do! What a great program.
I'd love to do something like that but we can't...the tickets that we receive (courtesy of the athletic department) absolutely can not be transferred to anyone, even if we aren't going to the National Championship (which we aren't). And purchasing tickets right now is insane...they are very hard to come by.
I'm sure someone out there is very thankful for your generosity!

Are you sure? You should check with the compliance department... though the NCAA certainly does have some ridiculously draconian rules. I knew a few years ago, DH had an extra pair of Final Four tickets and he could transfer his, provided that no money was exchanged and the recipient agreed to not sell the tickets they received.
I am 100% positive. We can give people our regular season tickets (can't sell them to them and the people we give them to can't sell them) but no post-season play tickets. Post-season tickets are picked up at Will Call at the arena and the athletic staff member must be present and show valid athletic department credentials to receive tickets.

Oh man, that sucks. Though I can see a "charity group" being a recruiting thing too..... DH has so many crazy stories about what people will do to get tickets to events like these and the rules the NCAA has set up for that stuff.
