late gift dilemma!

So I have this aunt (or ex-aunt if you want to get technical,   she and my uncle divorced when I was about 5) who just sent us a wedding gift.  It's a very nice gift of a Wusthof knife block set. It was not something that was even on our registry, b/c my brother (who knows everything about anything) told me he was going to buy us a knife set and he got use hand made knives from a place in southeast Ohio (they are AWESOME).  Anyway... this new gift did not come with a gift receipt and we have been using the other set since August 2!   Should I call my cousin and ask her if she could ask her mom for the receipt, or should we just keep them and regift them in the summer for one of the three weddings we are going to??

Re: late gift dilemma!

  • i'd keep and regift...i'd feel bad asking for a receipt, but thats just me.

  • It sounds really nice - I would just hang on to it and regift. DH and I have an extra set of pyrex dishes from our wedding we are going to regift for one of our many weddings in 2011. (We got the one off our registry, plus a second set, that I have NO clue where it came from. We tried to return it to where we were registered, and they said it wasn't something they carry....so it's been in my trunk for almost 5 months, haha.)

  • You could also store it until your others wear out and you need new ones. We got two sets of pots and pans and this is what we are doing.
  • I'd either keep them and regift or check out the stores that you registered at and see if they carry these particular knives. If they do carry them, you could try returning without the receipt.

I'd do this too!  I would not ask where its from or try to get a receipt.  Chalk it up to being the thought that counts.

  • Thanks for your input- I think we will go with the regifting idea!   I "think" I found the set at Macy's... and they were on sale for $100 or $150 depending on if they have steak knives with them or not. The knives are really nice and I would have been really excited if I didn't already have a really really nice set!  My brother bought us a set of knives from this place in Dover, OH that comes with lifetime warrantee and lifetime sharpening: http://www.warthercutlery.com/catalog/index.php

We tried to do a made in the USA registry, at least for the big items (pots&pans, kitchenaid, knives, dishes).  And then at least not made in China/or country that is trying to gain nuclear arms capabilities (ie North Korea/Pakistan).  That meant that there were certain items we couldn't get (most Martha Stewart is made in China,  anything that is from Crate & Barrel that is their "own" brand is made in China,  all the Food Network brand at Kohl's is made in China; but... Most everything else at Crate is made in India (all linens); Italy, Portugal, Poland (dishes, glassware); kohl's carries both Fiestaware (made in the USA) and Libbey glassware (also made in the USA); pyrex, corningware, anchor hocking, also all made in USA.   This was not an easy process and I broke down in tears the night we went to register!

Wusthof does not have an "off" brand- all of their knives are made in Germany.  By "off" brand, I mean like Simply Calphalon instead of Calphalon (Unison).  Calphalon Unison is made in Toledo, Ohio,  Simply Calphalon is outsourced to China.
