How to package cash as a gift?

My parents are giving my college-aged sister who is travelling to India for the summer cash in local currency as her Xmas gift. My mom asked me for ideas on how to package but ruled out any ideas I had (not in a wallet/purse as they already bought a ton of gifts for her for Xmas this year, not in small bills rolled up or stacked as it's too much to carry, not the Martha Stewart's folded mens' shirt as she didn't like the idea).

Any other ideas on how to creatively package? Not sure what denominations, but I'm guessing somewhere around 10 to 20 actual bills to be gifted. TIA!

Re: How to package cash as a gift?

  • Hmm.  I liked the wallet/purse idea. It could be a cheap wallet/purse that your sister can donate after if she doesn't like it.

I gave my parents money once for Christmas.  I just stuffed it in a small box and wrapped it.

  • My older brother once gifted me $100 dollars for one of my birthdays and to make it interesting, he arranged a scavenger hunt for the "treasure". I had a ton of different places around the house to check, each place I found had a little cash and another clue on where to go next. The last clue led to $50.00, it was one of the best ways I have every received a gift.

The scavenger hunt sounds like a lot of fun!

A bunch of my coworkers and I gave another coworker money for her bridal shower. We got a vase of flowers and stuck the bills in among the flowers.

  • Fold up the bills accordian style and tie in the middle with ribbon (then fan it out to make it look like a bow).  Tie each bow onto a small (table top) Christmas tree.  If you don't like the Christmas tree, you can take an old (dead) tree branch and spray paint it silver, then fill a small pot with sand or dirt and "plant" the branch in the pot.  Then tie the money all over the tree and you have an instant Money Tree.
  • Wrap them around a brick or other heavy item, then wrap that.

Stuff it inside a clear ornament and wrap that.

  • Get a travel book on India and put the bills in between the pages, then wrap the book.  Or if she doesn't have a passport cover already, get a cheap one and put the money in there, then wrap it.

My brother did this to me once before. Except, he put my money in a tupperware container and then froze it in a bucket of water. It took me forever to get it out. I was pissed.

    I love this idea!

  • I recently taped the bills together (they were singles...) end to end.  Then I layered them in a Kleenex box.  Then I wrapped the box, poked a hole in the top, and attached a tag that said, "Pull here."  It was great!  :)

Ditto, I also love this idea. It's something she'll actually use, isn't terribly expensive, and I've suggested it to my parents that they stick the money between the pages of the safe travelling tips...lol...they are SO nervous about her travelling there. She's 21, has been pretty sheltered and is going for a few months, part of it alone, and my dad's very old fashioned about ladies travelling alone, I think he'll like the guidebook idea. Thanks!

    You're welcome!

BTW, I was born and raised in Edmonton :)
