Day Care, Chicago?

Hi!  I'm three months pregnant and starting to look at day care for when I have the baby.  We are looking for 2-3 days per week of day care for our infant and one price we received from a day care center was about $800/month for 2 days per week and $1200/month for 3 days per week.  Is anyone on this board have a child/infant in day care in the city and what are you doing for day care?  Any tips on how to save money?  We thought about in-home care, but most people who are open to working part-time seem to ideally want full-time so I am concerned that they would jump ship.  Also, not really sure how to find a nanny share.  We live in the South Loop and have 3 day cares nearby, but worry that they will all be this expensive.  (I also posted this on the Bump, but there is no local Chicago board)

Re: Day Care, Chicago?

  • I don't live in the city and not really sure about the pricing, but have you considered a day care near your work or your husbands work?  Maybe you can find something more affordable.  If you find an established in home day care, I don't think they will mind having a part time child.

Best of Luck on the search and happy and healthy pregnancy!

Thanks!  For some reason I couldn't find that.

  • The prices you're quoting aren't out of the ordinary.

With many centers, you really don't get too much of a price break for using part-time care--they still have to staff the center to meet the state-mandated ratios, and the more part-time kids you have, the harder that is to manage.

You might have more luck with an in-home center (although I have NO idea how to really find one other than word of mouth, or maybe NPN). Or a nanny share (but that might be hard to arrange for just a couple of days a week).

Are your jobs downtown? You may be able to find a less expensive center further from downtown. Mine is in the medical district and not that much, but if you live S. Loop and work downtown, the commute likely wouldn't be worth it.
