Getting a job on base - H'ville
I know this board is basically dead, but I'm just throwing this out there for the heck of it. I'll graduate from UAH in May with a degree in biology. I want to get a job on the Arsenal. I don't really care what as long as it pays well and it's somewhat related to my field or strengths or whatever. I don't know what I want to do besides make money and have health insurance.
My dad is a government contractor and he's helping me a lot with applications, but I'd still like to hear from anybody else who works on base.
I've been using USAJobs.com to find announcements for stuff. I've applied to MDA entry-level, which is mostly just throwing a resume on a pile of resumes and seeing what sticks I guess. Also applied for a NASA entry-level announcement for biology and physical science students. I have no idea what either of these two jobs would entail, but I guess if they like my application they'd find something for me to do? Also, anybody know how long it takes to hear back about an application? I understand the government jobs are slooooooow.
Just wondering if there were any ladies here who have jobs on base. What kind of work do you do? How did you get it? Do you enjoy working on the base? My dad wants me to get into contracting; there are classes/seminars at UAH that can help with this. I'm really good at reading comprehension and writing, so maybe I could do this?

I'm not really expecting to get a job using my bio degree, and honestly I don't really want to because they're mostly research jobs and I'm sick of labs, haha. I'd be fine doing admin stuff but I'm not sure if they would consider me qualified. I have no business classes or anything like that. I like technical writing, though, and I'm pretty good at it, so I dunno.
Did you have to get any certifications or take any classes? Or would you recommend doing anything like that to be more marketable? Do you like your job generally?

I honestly love my job. I work with a great group of people and it's pretty easy going and laid back here. I have a degree in business management so I had a little bit of background. Plus, I worked for a company who does government contracting out in Madison prior to this, so I had a tiny bit of experience. I didn't have to take any classes or anything. I had to pass a background check to get my security clearance which was a pain, but not too bad.
Check out this website: http://www.cpol.army.mil/ Make sure you get your resume on there and just go ahead and start applying for jobs that you think would be a good fit. That website is to get hired on as a govt employee, but definitely check out contracting companies as well. I work for a really small company, but look into Intuitive or some of the other large companies and see if they have anything that might work for you!
