digital camera recs please

so I'm on the hunt for a new camera.  my current sony does not take pics fast enough!!  way too much time from when i click the button to when it actually takes and then too much time in between before i can take another.  i need something waaay faster with these 2 babies.  gotta be quick!  i have no desire to attempt to turn into any kind of professional or anything.  i just need something that produces better quality pics and is faster than what i have.  would like to stay under $500.  thanks!!!

Re: digital camera recs please

  • I got DH an Olympus for his wedding present.

We are Very pleased with it and it is waterproof, so underwater pictures are awesome and shockproof if dropped.

Here are 2 pictures we took underwater:

  • I recommend a dslr if speed is what you need. Trying to keep up with Lils was the reason I got mine. Even if you keep in auto mode forever, it's still going to keep up with your kiddos much better than a p&s, and if you take the time to learn what it can do (i.e., what you can do with it), you'll be quite pleased. :-)

I think you're just going to be disappointed if you spend 500 on a point and shoot. Really.

The entry level DSLRs seem to run around $600, I think. I'm a Nikon girl, but Canons and Nikons are both great, so it's just a matter of what feels better in your hands.

  • I agree with K8...get an entry level DSLR, you will love it!  And a lot of times you can take a workshop or one day type class at local art schools to teach you how to use it properly.  I shoot with Nikon too and love them!
  • I recommend a dslr also.  We bought the new Nikon in Oct, D3100 and we love it!  It's easy to use for entry level and takes great pics.  I think the camera is $649 and the extra lenses are sold separate.
  • Ditto!  I have the Canon Rebel XS and love it.  I have a long long long way to go before my pictures are good quality but I have noticed a huge difference in the year or so I have had my camera.  It is definitely fast and catches moving babies.  Plus, you can take 1,000 pictures to get that one good one.

  • thank you soooo much ladies!!  you have opened my eyes to a whole new world of cameras!!  hopefully one of these will prevent me from continuing to yell nasty words at my camera...

  • sony makes a non dslr camera as well that allows you to adjust the shutter speed etc so that you can get pictures of the little ones without those movement marks. It is one of their cybershot models and runs about 399-400
