Re: Getting excited for New Years, menu ideas

  • Things that went over really well on our mashed potato bar- chicken and broccoli.  I've also seen a lot of restaurants doing baked potatoes topped with BBQ shredded pork.  That might be fun and different.  I would at least add some chopped scallions.

I'd also add some sliced english cucumber to the spinach dip.  You might also consider adding a sliced bagette- you could put cheese, spinach dip, or a meatball on it.

  • I'd consider adding steamed veggies to your mashed potato bar (carrots, broccoli, etc.) That way, vegetarians can have a substantial meal that's not just carbs.

Also, there doesn't seem to be a real theme to your cheese plate. Do you have a cheese shop in town? If so, I'd let them choose three or four cheeses that go together. If not, there's lots of good websites out there on pairing up cheeses.

Are the Bourbon Caramel Truffles from this month's Cooking Light? If so, they're SO good!

  • Oooooh something else- pork and kraut and mashed potatoes are a big tradition around here for New Year's.  Since you are already doing the potatoes the pork and kraut would be a VERY easy addition.

They are and I haven't tried them yet so I'm glad to hear a postive review
