Career Change, Advice

Writing that last post about jumping Velvet just got me thinking, I guess.  I love graphic design and helping customers.  But I love the art side of designing- which I haven't got to do much of here lately.  Has anyone thought about changing careers?  I know a few ladies on here have gotten different jobs in the last few weeks.  Was it because you wanted a different sort of career, or more because where you were just wasn't working for different reasons?  I love photography and design and I know there are a couple ladies on here that do photography work.  How is that working out for you?  Would you recommend it as a new career choice?  I have been contemplating freelancing for a while now, like before I graduated, and DH thinks I would be able to.  I think I could even specialize it- to doing photos with people and their horses.  Since I am knowledgeable and comfortable in both areas, I would have an advantage over other photographers who are not comfortable with horses .  Speaking as a rider, I know that I would like to find someone like that to photograph Velvet and I.   Would anyone mind sharing opinions/ideas/advice?

Re: Career Change, Advice

  • If you want to go into photography, I would see if there is a local photographer that you can job shadow for awhile to make sure that's really what you want to do. Plus, it will be very valuable for networking.

I'm trying to take my photography business to the next level right now, and all of the legal, business stuff is very overwhelming. Be sure you look into all of this before you dive in. I dove in too soon, and now I'm having to pull myself back out.

Good luck to you!! You can do it!

  • Like above, I'm also starting to work on my photography career a bit more.  I also work at a design office... but I don't get to do any of the fun artsy stuff either... I  miss it.

I've been doing photography on the side for the past 6 years, but it's been more of a "if I get a call by chance, I'll go" and I got business through recommendations only.  Now that I feel my soul being sucked away at my normal job, I am working a lot harder to up my photography work.  I've been experimenting with different avenues of advertising, etc.  I've seen a lot of interest but it will all take time.  I expect the next few months as being really slow photography wise, so like huskerfan, I'll be taking time to work on my business plan and all that.  It's my goal to make at least half of what I make with my normal salary through photography, so that I can quit my job and find a "fun" part-time job.  I don't see that happening increadibly soon, but it's on the horizon, at least.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

  • Thank you both sooo much for your input.  You have definitely given me a lot to think about (Especially the legal documents part, eep).  Frenchy, I feel like I have similar feelings with the whole sole-sucking job situation.  It's kind of like being there makes me forget everything artistic and fun that I love.  If I could make photography my "main job" someday, that would be amazing.  When I picture myself 20 years down the road, I don't want to be working where I am now.  I want to be making my own decisions, being creative and enjoying my job.  Maybe it's silly, but that's a big reason that I am really considering this so much.  Again, thank you. I really appreciate your advice!

  • I'm just starting to learn how to use my camera, but I went to a really valuable workshop today. The people who run it also do a 3-day photo trip to a ranch in Montana where the specialize in photographing horses. It sounds like something that would be very useful for you if you are thinking about specializing in horses! Here's there website:(not clicky)

They do some really amazing work!

  • Oh, wow!  Thanks for the site.  I looked around a little, but I will definitely go back and look some more- very pretty photos!  That trip to Montana... Would be Awesome :p  That's cool that you got to go to a work shop.  Based on their work and site, I bet it was very interesting.
