What do you eat Christmas Eve?

We always have DH's parents over on Christmas Eve. We usually celebrate with his sister & family from out of state earlier in December. There will be 4 adults and our 3 kids. I am not sure what to make this year. We had prime rib last weekend when SIL was in town. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: What do you eat Christmas Eve?

  • I am Polish and my husband is Egyptian, so on the years that we spend Christmas Eve with my family we have pierogis and fish for dinner.

The years that we spend Christmas Eve with H's family, we have Middle Eastern food -- so kibbe, grape leaves, Armenian pizza, tabouleh, etc.

I'm guessing that you probably want something a bit more standard, what are you having Christmas Day? I can help you come up with some ideas.

  • We spend Christmas Day with my family and always have ham.
  • We usually go to my aunt's house and she has a buffet out after the hors d'ouevres. There's usually New England Clam Chowder (which I stay away from since I'm allergic to shellfish), perogies, baked mac & cheese, ziti, salad, etc.. and then a bunch of desserts like cheesecake and assorted Christmas cookies. Very yummy!
  • At my parents we do an evening of appetizers.  If it's just us I'll either make a homemade pizza or we'll do soup and fancy grilled cheese.
  • My husband is half Cuban and we celebrate Noche Buena. We always have pork, black beans & rice and turron. Some people serve suckling pig, but that's hard to find and might freak out some of our guests.
  • My family does a huge hors d'ouevres spread.

If we don't go home to visit them, we do a fancy homecooked Italian dinner.

  • We have what we call "Shepherd's Dinner" -- food the shepherds might have eaten on the original Christmas Eve. Cheese, bread, olives, hummus, fruit, wine. It evolved from us just quickly eating some hummus sandwiches before running out the door one particularly busy Xmas Eve, but now we always look forward to it and try to find weird sheep cheeses, imported dates, etc. We're not particularly religious, but it has been really fun to run with this theme, and hey, shepherds don't have to cook.
  • My SIL usually serves a big dinner - turkey and/or ham with all the fixings.  One year we hosted in the in-laws and served mexican - fajitas, chili, cornbread.  It was fun and I enjoyed that it was less formal.

Before we were married my family celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandma's and we had steak & shrimp fondue (in hot oil), lots of cheeses, chips & dip, and a spread of desserts.  The one year DH came with me he was amazed that a family "meal" contained no vegetables (or anything healthy for that matter)!  It was fun & interactive.

  • We do homemade tamales, ham and then a bunch of party foods but nothing fancy.
  • I live in Maine, we usually have lobster chowder with fresh baked rolls at my parents house. mmm...

Also, I love the idea of doing foods the shepherds would have eaten. Sounds like it would be really fun!

  • We spend CHristmas eve with my family.  My mom is Slovak so we have Keilbasa (sp?), sour kraut soup and a bunch of other foods that most people in no way ever associate with Christmas.

  • My husband is Jewish and I am Christian.  We host an open house all day Christmas eve.  This gives our Jewish friends and anyone who could not afford a flight home to their families a destination of fun.  About forty will show up for some part of the day.  We use an international menu plus any pot luck that people bring.

Appys are:  Fire Nuts,  Buffalo Wings, Crudites and a Cheese Board

Main Courses are Homemade 4 cheese Mac and Cheese

Korean-style Beef Short ribs (Padma Lakshmi's fabulous recipe)

Peanut Noodles with Carrots and Snap Peas

Penne with Chicken, Mushrooms, Peppers and Onions,

Brioche stuffed with Brie, Parma Ham and Carmelized Shallots,

California Vegetable Salad with Green Goddess Dressing

Dessert is Chocolate Cheesecake, Pavlova and 10 different kinds of cookies.   Most of our friends and famly will bring yummy desserts.

  • We usually go very casual on Cristmas. We make chicken salad sandwiches, pigs-in-a-blanket, cheese dip, sausage balls, spinach dip, and tons of cookies, pies, cake, and a chocate moose for dessert.

  • We always do Chinese takeout on Christmas Eve. It has become a tradition.  Of course on Christmas day, we have the traditional Christmas Feast! :)

  • We always go to my dad's side of the family on Christmas Eve.  It's the "hillbilly" side, as they call themselves.  LOL. There's ham, potato salad, kielbasa (thanks to the invading Polish influence of my mom), tons of cookies, and the highlight - a HUGE vat of vanilla custard that my great aunt makes.
  • We make whatever my mom wants. Last year she wanted steak, so we had NY Strip and potatoes and green beans. My mom gets Christmas Eve, and H's parents get us Christmas day and my Dad gets us Christmas night. This year it will be garlic shrimp and chicken with potatoes and some sort of veggie. It's easy for us since there's only 3 of us Christmas Eve. Usually my mom brings red velvet cake

  • I am making baked ziti, garlic bread and ceasar salad with homemade dressing.
