Minor Adoption Update

We found out today that the birth father's mother wants to meet us.  So IN 15 DAYS!!!! on the 28th, we're meeting the birth mom, her sister and her mother at 10am, and then at 1pm we're meeting the birth dad and his mother.  I'm wondering how many more people will be invited to this before all is said and done.

Re: Minor Adoption Update

  • I'm so excited for you guys!  Is the bio father on board for the adoption?  Do you know yet any details, like if it is a boy or girl?  Have you already answered these questions and my nestmembory is a failure?
    image
  • wow!  Are you cool with all that?
I know they hold influence over the birth parents, but it still just comes down to what they want, right? That's a weird way of wording what I'm trying to say... I guess I'm just thinking of what it would feel like to be in your shoes and not knowing how all this works, I'd be worried of an inquisition by a circus of people.

How many meetings do you have to "put up with". If Uncle Jo decides in the 11th hour to meet you, do you have to oblige or risk losing the baby?

I can't imagine the stress, Groomz. I hope everything goes smoothly for you guys! If you need me to do your makeup, just let me know and I'll be there in 2 shakes of a lambs tail.

  • After all the lousy posts lately I was really scared to open this one, yea for good news! Are the parents not on speaking terms or is normal to meet both sides separately? Will the case worker be there for both meetings?

I imagine they will be very happy with their decision once they meet you. Good luck/congrats!

  • EEP. This is so exciting, and also scary. SCARY EXCITING!

I'm so happy for you guys. I hope all of the meeting stuff goes smoothly. make sure you bring your dolphin picture with you!

  • White people are so demanding.

How exciting and terrifying for you guys at the same time!  I have no doubts they're all going to love you so much they'll want you to adopt them too.  Just practice pretending you're hearing, "You guys are just like the gay couple on Modern Family!" for the first time.

  • OMG, that is so exciting!  When is the she due?  I seem to recall February, but I may be wrong.

  • Fallin, we're expecting a girl and she's due on February 8.  The birth father knows about us and is on board with the adoption plan.  He was raised by two women, so he's 100% okay with 2 boys.

We only have to do meetings with the parents, but they can pretty much bring whoever they want (within reason).  I think at this point, if the birth mom asked to bring more people, her social worker would try to talk her out of it.  So we won't have to meet Uncle Maurice unless she brings him on the 28th.

If I let myself think about it too much, I'd be stressing about having to impress that many people, but we have no control over it, and we really can't request that they uninvite their families, so there's no point in stressing just yet.

It is up to the parents, and the parents only, but that doesn't mean their parents won't influence their decision.  Generally, these meetings are considered a formality and it's rare for anyone to change their minds after them, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

  • I am ridiculously happy for you guys!  They will all love you and want to start throwing babies at you (in a good way).
  • my birthday is February 8th! Tis a good day... tis a good day, indeed!
And I know you and I absolutely adore you...
And my mom is adopted and she's a girl.
So that means you're wearing pants and everything is going to go awesome on the 28th and you're going to have a baybee soon!
  • I'm all on pins and needles for you.  You will get my vibiest vibez on the 28th.

  • You are pretty awesome so I'm sure this will seal the deal.
  • You should start charging admission

  • How awesome and exciting and nail biting all in one.

Is the fact that he has two moms part of the reason they chose to have a gay couple parent their child? Didn't you say they had specifically requested that? I was telling my friends about that and they were very curious because they wonder about their chances to adopt and it made me hopeful.

  • Eeeeeee exciting! Just don't bring Nanny RoboAbe along. I don't think anyone's ready for that.

  • The birth father has asked me to come along as well.  I hope you don't mind.

I'm sure you'll knock these meetings out of the park.

  • This post makes me so happpy!!

I do not know how anyone can not love you when they meet you.  You are very charming and you put people at ease.  15 days!  I am so excited for you!

  • Groomz, it's all right around the corner!  I'm sure you'll knock 'em dead, and your sweet, baby girl will be in your arms in no time at all.
  • Thanks everybody!

Winged, the birthmom has a gay sister, which is what made her ask specifically for a gay couple.  I don't think the father had much to do with the choice, but he had the right to veto, but did not.  We assume him having gay parents at least made him open to us.

But the last birthmom, even though it didn't work out, also chose us over several straight couples, so there are folks out there who either want gay parents for their babies, or aren't going to discriminate.  Are your friends in your state?  The number of people who wouldn't have a problem are probably a bit higher here than there.
