Stinky vacuum

Everytime I vacuum a room it smells bad.  Changing the bag doesn't really help.  Any ideas to make the room smell nice after vacuuming?

We like to use the arm and hammer baking soda carpet spreads. It really helps get the dog or musty smell from dust to disappear.  Regular baking soda would probably work to get the smell out.  Just sprinkle, wait about ten minutes and vacuum.

That depends on a couple things...

Does the room stink prior to vacuuming or only after you are done?

What does it smell like... rubber, burnt hair, etc?

Can you smell it while you are vacuuming (does it come from the vacuum itself or is it coming up from the carpet)?

PP have good points. Could be some hair wrapped around the wheel axle/belt thing and burning from the friction. If that's not the case the carpet powders really do work to freshen the room. I have also heard of, but never tried, putting essential oils or extracts on cotton balls (vanilla, lavendar, peppermint even, I'd assume) and putting them in the bag/canister. If you try that, let us know if it works!

If it only smells when the vacuum is running you might need to change the filter if there is one. There is also a store here in Houston called Restoration Hardwear and they have vacuum beads that are awesome. You just put about 20-25 beads in the vacuum and it makes the carpet smell so good. I'm addicted to them!!!
