SMU Football documentary - ESPN's 30 for 30
Re: SMU Football documentary - ESPN's 30 for 30
I saw bits and pieces of it...very interesting story.
TI, IUIs, IVF = c/ps and BFNs
I wonder when this is coming on again, I'll have to text DH to set the DVR to record.
I've heard of the scandal before only because DH's family goes way back with SMU. H's grandfather was on the National Championship team and then came back to coach, and DH played soccer there.
Can you imagine? WOW. It was really a dirty thing to do, and I think the program got what it deserved.
This has probably been my favorite 30 for 30 documentary. Sadly, this was how most teams operated during that time - SMU was just really stupid about it (again and again and AGAIN) and got caught. Their program suffers from those fatal errors to this day.
Regardless, it is a great school.
DH and I watched it Sat night after Heisman and it is on again right now and DS is watching. It is quiet interesting and I remember some of it since I started college in the early '80's. My favorite comment in it is when someone states something like "Eric Dickerson actually took a paycut when he left SMU and went to play for the NFL/ Dallas Cowboys!"
Roar, love you picture!!
It's amazing to see how companies are coming out with products to monitor and prevent violations. DH just finalized a contract with a software company to monitor the contact that coaches have with their recruits - he plugs in the phone number of a high school student, and is able to monitor the phone calls a particular coach on staff made to that student (the software links the cell phone usage to this program and the university phone system). He also monitors the facebook pages of the coaches and athletes... it's a lot of work. But with technology it's getting a LITTLE easier to do it!
If you read the Wikipedia link, you'll see that the 1989 Kentucky team was put on probation (and considered for the death penalty). I had asked H about that and he said, "Well you're bound to get caught if you stuff a FedEx envelope full of cash and forget to seal it." Oops.
He has so many stories from the programs he's worked with and his colleagues have worked with it's amazing what gets said and people will try to do.
